  2. Cluster of Excellence - “From Regenerative Biology to Reconstructive Therapy” Prof. Dr. Gennadiy Zhegunov„New cryotechnologies with HES for long term storage of cat and  canine red blood cells for transfusion”Companion animal health maintenance is an actual social issue. Certain diseases of cats and dogs require urgent blood transfusion. Exigency for blood transfusion arises during surgical operations, in anemic animals and certain infectious diseases. However, blood donors require territory, special maintenance and associated costs. Therefore banking of frozen erythrocytes is an important task of veterinary medicine and cryobiology. Establishing of blood cryobank requires development of adequate technics and protocols of freezing, storage and thawing of red blood cells (RBCs).The lecturer will present a new data on the development of methods for the cryopreservation of erythrocytes of companion animals with application of cryoprotectant HES and its combinations with other cryoprotectants. It will be shown that RBCs of dogs and cats show different sensitivity to freezing-thawing processes and applied cryoprotectants. Establishment of optimal concentrations, temperature regimes and incubation time with protective agents will be outlined. The lecturer will present results of studies on osmotic behavior of erythrocytes in various extreme conditions, patterns of change in their shape and size. The features of the reaction of cytoskeletal proteins of RBCs of different animals after exposure to cryoprotectants and freezing will be presented and discussed. Advantages and disadvantages of HES as a cryoprotective agent will be deliberated in detail and the prospects for its application in cryopreservation of erythrocytes of pets for further transfusions will be outlined.
