Special Note to Indian Researchers: • Microdata of India in IPUMS: NSSO Schedule 10 samples under MOU with MOSPI • In 1999, the RG of India was invited to be a founding member of IPUMS-International • To date, with 90 official statistical offices participating…The Government of India has not yet decided to participate--discussions continue • A lesson in Indian democracy from the prime minister’s office (Sept. 2005): organize academic support • With your support, success—samples for 1991, 2001 and ultimately 2011—may be possible

  7. What are microdata? They are the individual responses to a survey, such as: NSS Sch. 10 (1983).Each line on the form is one unit (microdata) record.

IPUMS-International: Unit record data for social science and health research and teaching • 325 million integrated person records in 159 samples, representing 55 countries • Annually, samples for 6-8 countries are integrated into the IPUMS-International database. • Samples for 2010 round censuses are integrated as they become available • Hundred of variables are integrated: • Demographic • Education • Economic • Disability • Dwelling

IPUMS-International: Unit record data for social science and health research and teaching • Samples are integrated: identical concepts have the same codes in all samples • Universal population coverage and large sample sizes • Robust analysis of • Fertility and mortality levels: own-child methods, reports on births and deaths in the household in the past 12 months.  • Disability and access to health care.  • Household sanitation variables (water supply, toilet, and sewage facilities) to track progress toward Millennium Development Goals.

IPUMS-International: Unit record data for social science and health research and teaching • Complement one own’s surveys with population data from IPUMS-International • Complement Demographic and Health Surveys or malaria-treatment data • The purpose of IPUMS is to facilitate ready access to unit record data for analysis—NOT TO REPLACE OTHER DATA!

Amer. • Free, easy access to data for many countries and censuses • Large sample sizes: • Make it possible to include many different variables in a regression… multi-level model… • Produce separate estimates for population sub-groups • Easy to extract samples with a target sample size (e.g., 50mb) • Easy to revise an extract for a larger size or to include more countries, censuses, variables or sub-populations • Students show a great deal of creativity in using IPUMS-I • Skills acquired have an immediate pay-off when applying for jobs (e.g., World Bank), graduate school, etc.

  13. 4. How to “Select Cases”. Example: DisabilityFirst, explore the metadata: list of variables for selected countries

  20. Step 5. Customize sample sizeIf sample size is too large, click “customize”, otherwise “Continue to next step” Tip: do a small test. Customize at 0.1% If this works, then revise the extract and customize to 1%, 10% or whatever

Invitation to explore, use and cooperate • Explore the metadata, microdata and extract system: • www.ipums.org • www.hist.umn.edu/~rmccaa/IPUMSI/ipumsi_explore.ppt • In 1999, our dream: integrate samples of 21 countries in 10 years • Thanks to generous cooperation of 55 National Statistical Offices • Undreamed technological innovations • By 2010, integrated samples for 55 countries • 159 samples, 325 million person records • Number of users and usage far exceeded expectations • For the 2010 decade, our dream: • Double (2x) the number of integrated samples to 300 • Triple (3x) the number of users to 12,000 • Quadruple (4x) research output
