  1. RUNNING A TOP NOTCH CAMPAIGN Celine Gerson - Chief Ethics & Compliance Officer, Cameron

  2. The Cameron Way • Cameron’s Core Values: • Integrity • Responsibility • Excellence • Innovation • Collaboration • Through Cameron’s Corporate Responsibility, we carry these values beyond our own organization and out into the communities in which we work.

  3. The United Way • Cameron chose to support United Way as what United Way does fully embodies Cameron’s Core Values. • UNITED WAY: • Looks at thebig picture and brings together all the resources to address community social issues • Has thecapacity and experience to see long-term trends, responds to problems and gets results • Is the demonstrated leader in helping Houston respond to natural disasters, coordinating community resources and long-term recovery • Gives you confidence that your gift will be used where it’s truly needed, thanks to sound management and investment decisions by trained volunteers • Covers the entire circle of life, including children and youth, families, seniors and people rebuilding their lives

  4. How I became involved with United Way campaign…

  5. Cameron’s United Way Campaign History – Last Five Years

  6. How we Ran Our Campaign Prior to 2011 • Campaign led by tireless volunteers at various locations, without much management involvement • Kickoff rallies held at multiple locations with United Way speakers but low employee turnout • Special fund-raising events

  7. What Was Done to Cause the Dramatic Increase in 2011 • “This year’s campaign focused on getting all our employees engaged, at every division, to discover how the United Way can change the quality of the community we all live and work in, and it was a wonderful success. Our employees’ generosity allowed Cameron to more than double its previous record of giving!” – Jack Moore, President & CEO • Cameron’s leadership team, with the support of campaign committees and numerous volunteers, energized the 2011-12 campaign, educating employees, encouraging them to connect to the work of United Way and helping them understand how to do something impactful.

  8. Energize • Support for United Way began at the top--our CEO and his direct reports • The campaign leadership made up of: • a senior officer: Overall Campaign Chair • Our five Groups’ Presidents: chaired the campaigns in their respective business divisions • Each business division had campaign committees (Leadership Giving, Finance, Day of Caring, Special Event) to set goals, develop strategies, plan and conduct activities • Involvement at all levels: from shop floor to management

  9. Educate • Listened to live calls at 2-1-1 Texas/United Way HELPLINE to learn about the needs in our community and how United Way and the 2-1-1 Texas/United Way HELPLINE work to meet those needs • Invited United Way and its agency speakers to employee meetings to share stories – real-life experiences about United Way’s impact • Showed campaign video and used other communication vehicles to get United Way message across to employees • Daily intranet announcements and emails to all greater Houston employees during Fund Drive week with UW key facts and data

  10. Engage • Different strategies for each group • Group Leaders kicked off campaign with employee meetings and other campaign activities, making them educational, fun, and interactive • Participated in Days of Caring to promote volunteerism and enable employees to get a firsthand look at United Way’s work in the community • Cross-divisional events, like a clay shooting competition, golf tournament and chili cook-off, helped bolster participation among all employees, and created opportunities for teambuilding and friendly competition • Silent auctions provided a way for employees to buy and donate (created quite an excitement)

  11. Leadership Giving • Cameron emphasized the importance of Leadership Giving. Leadership Giving Chair organized special events and speakers to help encourage employees to join United Way’s Alexis de Tocqueville Society, Women’s Initiative and Young Leaders programs. • Cameron’s leadership giving efforts resulted in a 73% increase in leadership giving, with the number of leadership donors increasing by more than 50%.

  12. Thanks • CEO hosted a thank you “theme” reception for all leadership donors and campaign volunteers • Winners of the friendly competitions got recognized and received awards for the highest participation, the most increase, etc.

  13. Handy Resources • We found the following resources very helpful: • United Way staff • Campaign Toolbox at www.unitedwayhouston.org • United Way Guide and Coordinator Guide • Leadership brochures and roster • United Way Company Store • United Way Campaign Hotline at 713-685-2800
