  2. WHY A WIKI AND NOT FACEBOOK, LINKED IN or other software? Actually is being used by Wisconsin 4-H! Different types of software and internet experience have there own positives and negatives. For collecting history and colloboration wiki software is unique. Let’s at each software a bit… facebook

  3. WHY NOT FACEBOOK ? Facebook is: • good at checking status, pokes, chat • difficult for looking up older content • things get buried • where is the Facebook archive? • content owner& users must register • not good with privacy & security issues. • not good with indexed content.

WHY NOT Linked ? in • LinkedIn has some similarity to Facebook which brings similar disadvantages such as: • users must register with Linked In • not great with indexed content • LinkedIn is frequently associated with searches for jobs and networking with others in related industries or types of work.

  5. WHAT ABOUT OTHER WIDELY AVAILABLE SOFTWARE? • You ? Great for sharing video but not for sharing text and communication. • Flickr? Great for sharing photos, but not quite right for what the wiki can do. • A blog? – best suited to a single narrator & commenters, but not many contributors. • A website?- not enough tools for collaboration.   6. WHAT IS A WIKI? • A wiki (i/ˈwɪki/ WIK-ee) is usually a web application which allows people to add, modify, or delete content in a collaboration with others. • This definition brought to you by Wikipedia • A wiki grows according to needs of users.

  7. WHY A WIKI? • Wiki promotes collaboration volunteers, youth, leaders, and staff. • Wiki is invites more contextually deep collaboration like Wikipedia. • Wiki helps overcome geographic dispersal of 4-H and Extension.

  8. Where is the story of 4-H in Wisconsin? With 4-H participants… and staff… and volunteers… and local communities, etc. all have something to contribute to the 4-H story as well!

Everywhere in the state; in county and municipal historical societies, in private collections, at UW-Madison Archives at Steenbock Library, and in archives and affiliated Area Research Centers (ARCs) of the Wisconsin Historical Society.
