  1. Earth Science Grade 5 - First Semester 3. Water Cycle The Causes and Processes Involving Cloud and Rain Formation Seongnam Migeum Elementary School Sung, Hee soon

  2. The water in rivers or oceans The water in the air (cloud) Rain, snow, sleet, hail Back again to the earth’s land Key Word: Water Cycle

  3. Key Word: Water Vapor Vapor isthe waterin the air

  4. What is condensation? Warm water vapor or steam Cold surface such as a window Small drops of water Key Word: Condensation

  5. Key Word: Precipitation When water in clouds gets too heavy, it falls to earth as precipitation. It is rain, snow, sleet, or hail.

  6. Activities Key Words 1. Check up the new words Introduction 2. Brainstorm on the examples of water Objectives 3. Check up the lesson objectives Activity 1 4. Talk about the state of cloud on a rainy day Activity 2 5. Experiment on the formation of water droplets Activity 3 6. Discuss the process of rain falling Conclusion 7. Summarize the process of rain being formed Test 8. Quiz

  7. water Examples of water: Brainstorming(1) Where can you find water? oceans ice food rain rivers air

  8. 1 solid 3 gas 2 liquid Examples of water: Brainstorming(2) How many forms does water have? Water is found in three forms.

  9. Lesson Objectives We can explainthe formation processesof cloud and rain.

  10. The states of clouds on a rainy day • They look dark and thick. • Their color is gray or black. • Their amount is a lot. • They block the sun.

  11. 1 2 Experiment (1) Let’s experiment on the process which clouds and rain are formed Put the hot water in the beaker. Wait one minute, then pour most of it out leaving ¼ of water.

  12. 3 4 Experiment (2) Place the foil plate on the beaker. Put the ice cubes on the foil plate.

  13. 5 6 Experiment (3) Observe the underside of the plate. What happens when there are too many dropletsto fit on the plate.

  14. Discuss the results of the experiment(1) Where does the water under the foil plate come from? Because the warm water evaporated. When vapor meets cold surface, it can change to the water droplets. Why was vapor changed to the water droplets?

  15. Discuss the results of the experiment(2) Because the droplets join into larger droplets and get too heavy. Why do the water under the foil plate fall ?

  16. Cool air forms clouds. The sun’s heat makes water evaporate The process to form clouds and rain Water drops fall as rain or snow. Precipitation flows into streams, lakes, and oceans.

  17. The process to form clouds and rain 1 2 Evaporation The sun’s heat makes water evaporate or changeto a gas. The gas, called water vapor, is pushed upward and meets cool air.

  18. The process to form clouds and rain 3 4 Condensation Cooler temperatures high in the air make water vapor condense. Water droplets collect on dust to form clouds.

  19. The process to form clouds and rain 5 6 Precipitation The water drops join into larger drops. These heavy drops fall as rain.

  20. The process to form clouds and rain 7 Snow Cold air makes snow when water vapor goes up in the air.

  21. Write a poem about the rain Do you enjoy watching and listening to rain falling. Write a poem about the way you feel when you listen to rain.

  22. 8. Summarize • All water on Earth is in one of three states : • Liquid(water), Solid(ice), Gas(water vapor) • 2. The process to form cloud : • The sun’s heat makes water evaporate • The water vapor cools and condenses • The water droplets and dust form clouds • The process to form rain : • When drops get big enough, rain falls from clouds.

  23. Review Question 1 What form does water take at room temperature? Answer: Gas

  24. Review Question 2 What makes water move from Earth into the air? Answer: Sun’s heat

  25. Review Question 3 What comes out of some clouds when the temperature is very low? Answer: snow

  26. Review Question 4 Rain, hail, and snow are all forms of _________. Answer: precipitation

  27. Thank you!! Have a nice day!!
