  1. Conflict- Genocide and Revolution Irreconcilable contention between two or more parties… in other words, people don’t get along.

  2. Genocide The deliberate attempt to get rid of a ethnic or cultural group. A number of genocides have occurred around the world; -Armenian -Rwandan -Sudan -Holocaust -Bosnian -Cambodian

  3. Armenian Genocide Ottoman Empire (present day Turkey) Ottoman Muslims (Turks) killed Armenian Christians Over a million dead

  4. Rwanda European Imperialism allowed Belgium to take over Rwanda. They put the Tutsi minority in charge. After independence the Hutu majority gain power. They begin killing Tutsi. Up to a million dead in just a few months

  5. Sudan Muslim majority began attacking the Christians. Thousands of boys fled to neighboring nations. Eventually South Sudan is formed as the world’s newest nation. Today Christians in South Sudan are attacking Muslims neighbors.

  6. Holocaust Hitler’s final solution to get rid of the “Jewish” problem. The Holocaust was a well organized and purposeful attempt to kill an ethnic group, mostly the Jews. After WWII ended the Nazi guards were tried at Nuremburg for crimes against humanity

  7. Bosnian The Austria-Hungary empire left the Croats, Serbians and Croats to fight each other in the Bosnia, Herzegovina, Serbia area. Eventually the UN got involved but the conflict continued. To resolve the conflict the nations of Serbia, Yugoslavia, Kosovo and Montenegro are created

  8. Cambodian Pol Pot and his Khmer Rouge overthrew the government of Lon Nol. Pol Pot started Year Zero, or a reset of Cambodia that emptied the cities and forced millions to labor on farms. He cut off all relations with foreign nations and persecuted the educated and foreigners.

  9. Revolutions Revolutions are time periods of change. They can be political or non political -Neolithic Revolution -French -Latin American Revolution -Russian -China Political Revolutions typically come when governments fail to meet the needs of their people

  10. Neolithic The shift from nomadic hunting and gathering to settled villages and farming However, as the people began to settle conflict arose as they fought for the best resources. Since the Neolithic Revolution many wars and Imperialism have occurred looking for the best resources

  11. French Revolution The French were unhappy because the government failed to meet their needs. Three causes: -outdated social structure -Crop failure -Deficit spending Inspired by the Americans and the Enlightenment the French changed their government over a ten year period until Napoleon

  12. Latin American Revolution Angry at the oppressive Encomienda system revolution simmered until Napoleon invaded Spain. Latin American nations mostly attempted Democracy but still struggle to meet the needs of their people. Also, drug cartels are caused havoc in many Latin American nations Leaders to know: Toussaint L’Ouverture Father Miguel Hidalgo Simon “The Liberator” Bolivar

  13. Russian Revolution During WWI Russia was severely unprepared due to lack of modernization. Lenin took advantage of the chaos to overthrow the Czar The people demanded Land, Bread and Peace Russia Soviet Union Communist nation Lenin- NEP (new economic plan) Stalin- 5 year plans and farming collectives

Chinese Revolution Mao Zedong led the Chinese peasants to create the People’s Republic of China (Communist) He gained support during the Long March, then joined with the government to fight off Japanese imperialism Following WWII Mao took over. Mao pushed the Cultural Revolution and Great Leap Forward, both failed

  15. Tiananmen Square Today China remains a communist nation, meaning the government has total control. However, they have opened some areas to foreign investment, bringing money and modernization. These changes prompted students to protest for more political say but they were dispersed by the military.
