  6. Reading • read a variety of books - fiction / non-fiction • read aloud individually and in groups • use different cues to read unfamiliar words

Library Books • Your child will be able to choose books from the School Library and will be encouraged to read widely; this will stretch their imagination and increase their confidence. • Please encourage your child to choose non-fiction texts as well as stories. • Please continue to write comments in the reading record book when your child has read to you at home. Books should be returned to school each Wednesday in order that your child may select new books.

  10. Writing • write in sentences - using capital letters and full stops • spell familiar words correctly • use spelling patterns • write stories - beginning, middle and end • write for different purposes - lists and instructions

Literacy homework Things you can do to support your child’s learning. • spell Christian and Surname • spell colour names • spell days of the week • Super Spellers – High Frequency Words • read weekly reading books • wider reading - join the library • I-Spy games - know alphabet and corresponding letter sounds • read - signs, posters, adverts, grocery packets • bed-time stories - teach story language

  12. Homework - Reading • use pictures to help • break words down • self correct - read for meaning • sound it out • check comprehension - 3 P’s -pause, prompt and praise

  13. Homework - Writing • practise handwriting • write a story with your child • write own invitations and cards • write for a purpose - thank you notes, letters, shopping lists and instructions

  14. Homework – Spelling • Super Spellers (more information to be sent at a later date) • spell out words with fridge magnets • use picture dictionaries • play word finding games • anagrams - words within words

  15. Using and applying maths • choose a sensible approach to tackle a problem • explain how to solve a problem • use words, symbols and simple diagrams to record what they do in a mathematical way • notice patterns and describe them

Number • count, read and write numbers up to 30 and put them in order • recognise all numbers to 100 • count on and back in ones and tens • odd and even numbers • know + and - facts for each number up to ten • know they can do addition in any order and to start with the biggest number first • double and halve numbers

  17. Shape, Space and Measure • use mathematical names for 2D and 3D shapes and recognise their properties • measure and weigh objects • tell the time to the hour and half hour • graphs and data handling

  21. P.E. and Games • Your child needs a white T-shirt, black or navy shorts and black pumps. • In the interests of safety for all: Please ensure your child does not wear ear-rings on P.E. and Games days. • Children may wear a tracksuit for games lessons if they wish.

Reminders • Please ensure that your child arrives in the playground by 8:50 am. • Normal sleeper type studs are allowed for pupils with pierced ears, no other types are permitted for health and safety reasons. • No jewellery is permitted except for a wrist watch. • No nail varnish is permitted. • All pupils are encouraged to bring a maximum 500ml, preferably clear bottle to school for use in class (water only.) Suitable bottles are on sale at the office at £2. • All personal items require the child’s name please. • THANK YOU.

Parking and general safety at the school entrance • Please support the “voluntary” one way system in operation in George Avenue. • Please respect our neighbours in George Avenue and do not obstruct or block driveways. • Please no parking or turning in the access road or the school staff car park. • Please consider parking further away and walking some of your journey. • Make the safety and wellbeing of everyone especially the children the most urgent priority no matter what the weather conditions may be! • Help prevent any serious incident or accident.
