SAT Subject-Verb AgreementRule Review • If a sentence begins with there or here, the subject will be located after the verb. • Either/or and Neither/nor – the subject closer to the verb determines if the verb is singular or plural. • Don’t let prepositional phrases get in the way The man with the two dogsis walking down the street.

  12. Nathaniel Hawthorne 1804-1864 • The Scarlet Letter is classified as a Gothic Romance. • Major Themes: Sin, Repentance, Morality

  13. Hawthorne • Hawthorne was born in Salem, Massachusetts. • His ancestors were among the first Puritans to settle in New England. • Hawthorne’s great-great-grandfather was a judge in the 1692 Salem Witch Trials, and condemned some of the accused women to death—a fact that greatly shamed Nathaniel Hawthorne generations later. • Hawthorne’s family history provides the theme for some of his major literary works including The Scarlet Letter.

  14. Time & Place • Boston in the mid-1600s was colonized based upon the Puritan way of thinking—it was intended by its founders to be an ideal Christian community.

  15. Puritan Society • Puritans rejected the belief that divine authority is channeled through any one particular person, such as the king or the pope. • Puritans believed that people had the power to receive spiritual enlightenment directly from the teachings of the Bible. • Puritans believed in predestination—God had already chosen who would go to Heaven, but people did not know, so they were all expected to live a “pure” life.

  29. Writing Workshop: Final Draft • You must write in 3rd person. This is an analytical paper. Your interpretation must be expressed as analysis. • Thesis: In the poem,“O Captain! My Captain!”, Whitman uses an extended metaphor between Abraham Lincoln and the captain of a ship. • Quote and commentary: Whitman references the ship as “weather’d” and he says, “the prize we sought is won”. The poet is comparing Lincoln’s fight to abolish slavery to the “weather’d ship” and he acknowledges Lincoln’s successful Emancipation Proclamation in the metaphor of the prize that was won.

  30. Final Draft • Introduction: Hook and a thesis statement. • Body Paragraphs: Think of each body paragraph as a mini-essay. You must have a topic sentence. Use transitions to introduce the text evidence and connect the thought to the commentary. The text evidence must be in quotation marks. The title of the poem must be in quotation marks. • Conclusion: Echo ideas from thesis—YOU MUST TALK ABOUT THE LITERARY ELEMENT THAT YOU HAVE ANALYZED. Write a memorable and impactful concluding statement.
