  5. Time Frame • December 2012 becomes legal • ROs by 31st March 2013 • Commences April 2013 • 3 years (20%/40%/40%) • Majority completed by 31st March 2016 • 5 year cycle

  6. Who does what? • Designated body (PCT currently) – arrange regular appraisal • Appraisers - appraise • Responsible Officers - recommend • GMC - revalidates

  7. Inputs to appraisal • Personal Information • Scope & nature of work • Supporting information • Review of last year’s personal development plan • Achievements, challenges & aspirations Should include all summaries of appraisal & review all PDPs in current revalidation cycle

  8. Supporting information 1. Continuing professional development 2. Quality improvement activity 3. Significant events 4. Feedback from colleagues 5. Feedback from patients 6. Review of complaints and compliments

  9. Good Medical Practice Updated edition of Good medical practice was published 25th March 2013 Guidance will come into effect on 22 April 2013

  10. Four Domains ofGood Medical Practice Framework for Appraisal and Revalidation 1. Knowledge, skills and performance 2. Safety and quality 3. Communication, partnership and teamwork 4. Maintaining trust Within each domain are three Attributes

  11. Knowledge, skills and performance • Maintain your professional performance • Apply knowledge and experience to practice • Ensure that all documentation (including clinical records) formally recording your work is clear, accurate and legible

  12. Safety and quality • Contribute to and comply with systems to protect patients • Respond to risks to safety • Protect patients and colleagues from any risk posed by your health

  13. Communication, partnership and teamwork • Communicate effectively • Work constructively with colleagues and delegate effectively • Establish and maintain partnerships with patients

  14. Maintaining trust • Show respect for patients • Treat patients and colleagues fairly and without discrimination • Act with honesty and integrity

  16. Reflection Your supporting information is important But It is your reflection on that information and your record of that reflection that should inform the discussion And Leads to identification of areas for development and improvement

  17. Review of last year’s PDP • Commentary • Most objectives should be achieved within time agreed • However plans change and some objectives take longer to achieve

  18. Achievements, challenges and aspirations • General commentary • Opportunity to review practice, chart progress and plan for development

  19. Declarations before the appraisal discussion Doctors should make a declaration that is visible to the appraiser that demonstrates: 1. acceptance of the professional obligations placed on doctors in Good Medical Practice in relation to probity and confidentiality 2. acceptance of the professional obligations placed on doctors in Good Medical Practice in relation to personal health 3. personal accountability for accuracy of the supporting information and other material in the appraisal portfolio

  21. Personal Development Plan • SMART & KISS • Itemised list of personalised objectives • Should include time scale for achievement and • How completion should be recognised

  22. Summary of Appraisal • overview of the supporting information and the doctor’s accompanying commentary including the extent to which the supporting information relates to all aspects of the doctor’s scope and nature of work • should be structured in line with the four domains

  23. 5 Appraiser Statements 1. An appraisal has taken place that reflects the whole of a doctor’s scope of work and addresses the principles and values set out in Good Medical Practice. 2. Appropriate supporting information has been presented in accordance with the Good Medical Practice Framework for Appraisal and Revalidation and this reflects the nature and scope of the doctor’s work. 3. A review that demonstrates appropriate progress against last year’s personal development plan has taken place. 4. An agreement has been reached with the doctor about a new personal development plan and any associated actions for the coming year. 5. No information has been presented or discussed in the appraisal that raises a concern about the doctor’s fitness to practise.
