  2. “Walk and Talk” • When students enter the gym, get them into small groups or partners and give them an index card with a scenario written on it. • While they walk around the gym, warming up for class, they should discuss the scenario and come up with answers to share with the class.

  3. Scenarios for “Walk and Talk”

  4. Graphic OrganizerCircle Map • Immediately following (or during) the walk and talk, students can write their ideas/thoughts on the circle map • Pulls all the ideas together • Assessment tool (pre/post unit) • You can do this individually, as a class or in small groups. Mary

  10. Exit Ticket • Give each student an index card to answer a question using one or two sentences. • Example: How can I set challenging fitness goals that help me stay committed to wellness? (8th grade) • Example: What is one fitness goal you have set for yourself? Why is it important to you? (4/5th grade)

  11. Word Walls • You can use word walls to expand on student vocabulary. (See examples on blackboard)

  13. Listening • Following instructions • Learning from others (idea exchange) • Acting on advice given • Understanding task and terminology used

  14. To support listening.. • Positive recognition of those who listen carefully • Pair actions and words together to enhance understanding • Repeat instructions as activities are happening • Question to gauge understanding of instructions • Observe students’ activity

  15. Speaking • Having students repeat key points, instructions, terminology • Students ask and answer questions • Discuss with small group/partner • Students teach skills, using cues

  16. Provide opportunities for speaking • Time to ask and answer questions • Encourage students to answer in sentences • Encourage discussions • Encourage use of word wall words • Develop speaking and listening skills together • A time for listening, a time for action and a time for speaking
