  2. Hutu and Tutsi • Live in Rwanda and Burundi • Ethnic tension- Belgian routes • Hutu beat Tutsi in civil war • Genocide discussed before hand

  3. Colonial history 1884-1923 German Occupation • Favored Tutsis for their fairer skin and taller composure • Believed that Hutus were there to serve Tutsis Hutu Tutsi

  4. Colonial history 1923-1962 Belgian Occupation • Replaced Hutu chiefs with Tutsis

  5. President Juvenal Habyarimana’s Assassination • April 6,1994 Hutu President Juvenal Habyarimana’s plane was shot down and he was killed

  6. Juvenal Habyarimana • Former President of Rwanda • Plane shot down April 6th, 1994 • Aristocratic Hutu family • Became army’s general • “Ousted” the president before him

  7. Revenge • Hutus blamed Tutsis for president’s death • Presidential guards kill political leaders

  8. Paul Kagame • Blamed for the crash • Current Rwandan pres. • Leader of Tutsi • Thinks Hutus did it in order to wipe out the Tutsi

  9. The beginning • Soon after an order of slaughter was issued for more than 30,000 people.

  10. Five days= 40,000 murdered • Within hours Hutu gunmen began killing Tutsis and moderate Hutus-in the next five days they had killed at least 40,000 people

  11. Foreigners leave • April 9th: America, France, and Belgium removed their citizens

  12. The next 100 days • 800,000 people killed

  14. Genocide • Killed regardless of age, sex, etc. • Killed many political figures • War rape; many Tutsi women harassed

  15. Today • Fighting continues between Tutsis and Hutus

  16. United Nations • People blame UN for not stopping the genocide

  17. Population • Decreased population to that of 1986

  18. Orphans • Thousands of children were orphaned
