    2. The UK Carbon Capture and Storage Consortium, led by Dr Gibbins, is a group of 15 UK universities and research institutes set up to undertake research on all aspects of the CCS value chain. The members of the Consortium work closely with Government and UK industry as well as other academics in the UK Energy Research Centre. The mission of the consortium is: “to promote an understanding of how options for decoupling fossil fuel use from carbon emissions through the use of carbon capture and storage could be used to assist the UK in achieving an energy system which is environmentally sustainable, socially acceptable and meets energy needs securely and affordably”. 8. Stationary CO2 Sources & Geological Storage Opportunities in China’s Sedimentary Basins

    13. Tilbury - 2x 800MW Capture ready- photo montage ????- ???? (some details omitted)

    19. Coal-by-wire – The BYD Plug-in Hybrid “??????” – ???????????

    20. Political Context G8 Gleneagles Summit & Plan of Action (July 2005) ????????? Emphasis on Carbon Capture and Storage ??????????? Engaging Emerging Economies ???????? EU-China Summit (September 2005) ?????? Joint Declaration on Climate Change & Energy ???????????? “ We will aim to achieve the following co-operation goals by 2020: To develop and demonstrate in China and the EU advanced, near-zero emissions coal technology through carbon capture and storage ”

    21. Overall Objectives for UK/EU/China NZEC Cooperation Assess the Potential for near-zero emissions coal use through CCS in China. Develop expertise and capacity for CCS in China; Demonstrate in China and EU, advanced near-zero emissions coal technology for power generation by 2020 http://www.nzec.info/

    22. UK-EU-China Near-Zero Emissions Coal Three-Phase Approach

    25. Conclusions (1) Climate change is a key driver of energy policy Reduced emissions from coal and other fossil fuel use will be required to mitigate Climate Change Near Zero Emissions Coal use with CO2 Capture and storage will make this possible, even in countries with a high reliance on coal.

    26. Conclusions (2) Accelerated Demonstration, Deployment & Technology Transfer is required – in parallel New gas and coal plants must be capture ready Cooperation between Europe and China is under way
