  1. AG20-RPT-14-0015 Storing Elevation Data in an OGC GeoPackage: ACG/ERDC Pilot Study 18 July 2014 Micah Brachman Systems Engineer Micah.Brachman@rgi-corp.com(703) 272-3204 x2066

  2. Bottom Line Up Front • The Army Geospatial Center (AGC) and Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) are developing a basic capability for storing BIL16 elevation data in an OGC GeoPackage • Storing elevation data in a GeoPackage may benefit users in both Connected and Disconnected, Intermittent, or Limited (DIL) Network Environments • Use of OGC GeoPackage and other OGC open standards enables mapping system interoperability and shared Situational Awareness (SA) across DoD and Joint Interagency, Intergovernmental, and Multinational (JIIM) partners

  3. DIL Users OGC GeoPackage

  4. DIL Users: Pilot Study • 16-bit Band Interleaved by Line (BIL16) raster format elevation data was converted to GeoPackage and displayed on an Android end user device (EUD) • Converted BIL16 data to GeoTIFF format • Created MBTiles raster tile pyramid and converted tile pyramid to OGC GeoPackage • Loaded and viewed elevation data on Android EUD • Proof of concept pilot study • elevation data can only be viewed as a 2D image

  5. Connected Users Any Web Server Any Map Server MapProxy WMS, WMTS TMS, KML SQLite OGC GeoPackage

  6. Connected Users: Pilot Study • BIL16 elevation can be encoded and stored in a modified MapProxy cache format, which can be ingested by NASA World Wind • MapProxy resides on a Web Server, which can connect to World Wind • BIL16 data could be rendered in 3D in World Wind using this method • Next step: connect GeoPackage with raw BIL16 data to MapProxy

  7. Way Forward •  Continue Connected and DIL pilot studies to develop fully functional prototypes • Eventually these efforts should be merged into a single comprehensive system architecture •  Standardize support for elevation data within GeoPackage • Work with OGC, DoDprofile • Develop data model for storing true 3D data (i.e. [x1, y1,z1,z2…zn]) in a GeoPackage
