  2. Research and Rationale • Students learn both academics and language at the same time through the use of language-based activities. (Savile-Troike, 1984) • ELLs need “targeted output” in written and oral language practice. (Swain, 1985). • It is more effective to schedule several short, but intensive practice sessions than to practice in one long session (Bloom & Shuell, 1981). • SIOP Feature 20: Hands on Materials for Student Practice (Echevarria, Vogt & Short, 2000)

  3. Peek-a-Boo! *Purpose Gives students a hands on experience they can interact with. Sleeves visually separate information, breaking into smaller chunks *How to use Slide in one card at a time. Open or close flaps to practice different parts of the cards *Samples (and extra ideas) -decimals -cvc words -long vowel sounds

  4. Poke Cards *Purpose Poke cards provide a quick, self-checking activity with multiple answer choices. It is great test-prep, easy to set up, and can fit any topic. *How to use Each card has a question and multiple answer choices. Each answer choice has a hole associated with it. Students choose an answer to the question, poke a pencil gently into the hole, then flip the card over to see whether they were correct. *Samples (and extra ideas) Vocabulary and definitions Math problems Spelling words Basic factual knowledge

  5. I Have…Who Has… *purpose Students practice listening, reading, speaking in front of a group, and content. *how to use Pass out cards to each student. Students listen for the question that goes with their answer, then read their card. 8.1 for small groups *samples (and extra ideas) x, ÷, +, - Fractions Vocabulary

Two Part Matching *Purpose Two part matching activities provide a simple method for practicing any skills with two parts *How to use Write one part of the matching information on the first piece of the pair, write the other part of the information on the second piece. Students find the matches and put them together. *Samples (and extra ideas) words/definitions math problems/answers synonyms antonyms question/answer

  7. (Learning is...)The Game *Purpose Practice creating and saying a variety of sentences in English. Practice other content objectives. Make learning fun. *How to use Play a counter out of a jar and move. Take a card from the appropriate deck. Say a sentence *Samples (and extra ideas) Content questions Spelling words Vocabulary in sentences

Exit Tickets *Purpose Exit tickets provide teachers and students a quick method to communicate the level of understanding for a day’s lesson. *How to use At the end of a lesson, students complete the exit ticket and turn in to the teacher. The teacher can see with a quick glance how well the student understood the material and what areas may need reteaching. *Samples (and extra ideas) See handout for samples
