  2. The FIU Story Chapter One It started as a collaboration and before we knew it, we were embedded.

  3. What is an embedded librarian? • A librarian traveling with troops in Iraq. • A librarian attached to a specific course. • A librarian that provides distance learners with a direct connection to the library. • A librarian that provides services directly to students in an online or traditional course. • All of the above

  4. Traditional, Hybrid, and Online Courses • May co-teach and/or teach multiple sessions • Sessions should be timed to coincide with course research • May evaluate and grade assignments • May be responsible for a percentage of the course grade • Time commitment far exceeds one-shot library instruction

  5. Economic Geography - GEO 3502 • Ongoing collaboration with faculty member • Librarians taught 5 sessions • Provided annotated bibliography of online sources • Offered consultations for individuals or groups • Observe final presentations; provide feedback to faculty

  6. Honors Seminar - IDH 3005 (Fall semester course) • Preparation for Spring course requirements • Librarians teach 7 sessions • Library modules determined by librarians • Assignments are designed, corrected and graded by librarians • Library component is 20% of the total course grade

  7. EDF 1005: Introduction to Education • Embedded within WebCT course • Introduced by professor on bulletin board • Provided instruction modules • Self-introduction • Monitored twice each week

  8. Tips for Online Embedding • Program works best with these elements: • The librarian works with students on specific research-focused assignments • Posts tips independently from the discussion board • “Ask the Librarian” • built into the specific assignment • set up in the discussion board • Faculty members reiterate to students the importance of asking the librarian Matthew and Schroeder (Community College of Vermont)

  9.
