Kwame Nkrumah • Born in the British West African colony, Gold Coast • Educated in the United States • Quickly became a leader of the Gold Coast independence movements • Promoted a plan called “Positive Action” • In 1953, as Prime Minister of the colonial government (still under Great Britain), asked for Ghana’s independence as quickly as a constitution could be installed • In 1957, Ghana becomes the first African state to become independent of its colonial power. • Elected first president of Ghana by a vote of 1,016,076 to 124,623
