  4. What We’re Testing • Are all the different ratings from 4-10 equally likely to occur overall? • Does zodiac sign affect the rating? • Does zodiac sign affect which areas of life are of most concern?

  5. How we went about it Procedure and Variables • 50 random numbers from 1 to 120 • Choose the corresponding weeks from the horoscope archives and analyze • Test 1: used numbers 4-10 • Test 2: used scale of • very high (v) = 9-10 • High (h) = 7-8 • Medium (m) = 5-6 • Low (l) = 4

Test #1: Frequency of Each Rating • Chi-Square Goodness of Fit Test • Conditions: • Categorical data --- Horoscope ratings are categorical • SRS --- 600 random ratings • All cell counts > 5 --- all exp. cell counts > 5 • All conditions met >> χ²distribution >> χ²GOF test • Hypotheses: Ho: Ratings are uniformly distributed Ha: Ratings are not uniformly distributed + = 352.2 P ( >352.2|df=6)=0.0001

  11. Conclusion • We reject the Ho because the p-value of 0.001is less than the alpha value of .05. We have sufficient evidence that ratings are not uniformly distributed.

Test #2: Sign vs. Rating • Chi-Square Independence test • Conditions: • 2 Independent SRS--- yes, known • All cell counts > 5 --- all exp. cell counts > 5 • All conditions met >> χ²distribution >> χ²Independence test • Hypotheses: Ho: There is no association between sign and rating Ha: There is an association between sign and rating =37.38 P( >37.38|df=33)=0.27

  14. Conclusion • We fail to reject the Ho because the p-value of 0.27 is greater than the alpha value of .05. We have sufficient evidence that there is no association between sign and rating.

  18. Conclusion • We fail to reject the Ho because the p-value of 0.99 is greater than the alpha value of .05. We have sufficient evidence that there is no association between sign and area.

Application to Population • The ratings of horoscopes are not evenly distributed; they are quite inflated toward the positive side • Each sign has a different “personality”, but that does not warrant for an association between sign and rating • All because one is a specific sign, they cannot expect more horoscopes based upon a certain genre

  22. Error/Bias • Some could have discrepancies with our scale of goodness; very high (9-10), high (7-8), medium (5-6), and low (4) • Areas fall under two categories • No days below a “4”

  23. Conclusion/personal opinion • We don’t believe in horoscopes • No rating below 4, don’t want to give people negative days • Claim that each zodiac sign makes a person different, but according to this study, all areas of concern and daily ratings are roughly the same
