Young People’s Conference • Held in February 2009 • 84 young people attended from 21 high schools from across Lancashire • Considered potential barriers and possible suggestions in 10 topic areas linked to childhood obesity • Asked to identify what key organisations should do to support this agenda

  3. LCC and District Councils could also make us feel safer and improve local park facilities by: • Helping us to get to and from places safely • Creating safer places for us to be in • Making local parks more attractive • Investing in more adventure parks/play areas

  4. LCC and District Councils could also promote Physical Activity by: • Offering more, cheaper and some FREE activities locally • Offering lots of different activities including extreme sports and gyms for kids • Providing free/ cheaper transport to leisure centres/ activities

  5. LCC and District Councils could also promote Healthy Eating by: • Having less fast food outlets • Promoting the sale of fruit and vegetables in shops • Having more practical food work in schools • Promoting key messages and healthy choices through advertising and campaigns

  6. Health Professionals could: • Come into schools to give more information • Provide access to a school nurse, dentist/ optician in schools • Provide more dental health promotion in schools • Increase awareness of benefits of breastfeeding with Young People

  7. Schools could also: • Improve the dining room environment • Don’t provide snacks containing sugar except at lunchtime • Introduce rewards system • Provide cookery clubs • Teach skills to cook meals from scratch

  8. Schools could also: • Let us choose the PE kit • Introduce more things like walking buses involving the community • Teach key messages, including body image across school • Raise awareness and teach benefits of breastfeeding to make it normal

  9. Others could also: • Be inclusive especially for children with special needs • Provide positive role models • Get families involved • Open "healthy fast food bars" • Encourage police to let young people do activities in the street

  11. Next Steps: • Young people’s views are being shared with partners to help shape action plans • Forthcoming conference and showcasing event for Young People to help develop the ‘Be Active Eat Healthy’ campaign
