  1. Taking a Block Curriculum Online: Moving Integrated Library Instruction for a Nursing Curriculum to an Online Environment NCNMLG 2011 Xan Goodman, University of Southern Nevada xgoodman@usn.edu February 24, 2011

  2. Presentation • Background • Collaboration • Technology • Challenges

  3. Background • University of Southern Nevada • Relatively new, private non-profit university founded in 1999 • Offering only four areas of study: Pharmacy, Nursing, Business and a residency, intern program in Orthodontics • Two campuses in two states Nevada and Utah • Enrollment as of Fall 2009 842 ( this number does not include our new ABSN students)

  4. Block System • Each cohort of students pass through one course (block) at a time. • In order to move to the next course students must pass each course with a 90% • Students are given an opportunity to reassess if they do not pass • Library instruction is not included on assessments in the nursing program but is included in pharmacy.

  5. TimeLine to Course Creation

  6. Technical Challenges • Learning Captivate Software without formal training • Sharing 3 laptops with Captivate Software • Finding time in my work schedule to record • Special challenges with recording I share an office at my university. I needed to reserve study room space at my library to record. • A new learning management system- ANGEL • Transferring files using FTP

  7. Recording Times – Partial Schedule

  8. Modules

  9. Pre-Test and post-test

  10. Class Participation ABSN One

  11. Collaboration • Getting all the stakeholders together • Nursing • Library • Orbis • Challenges • Learning new software • A new LMS • Recruiting pre-testers before content went live.

  12. Course Development • Challenge of moving in-class active learning activities to an online environment • Moving planning curriculum elements from USN model to Orbis model

  13. Library Orientation Module

  14. APA Module

  15. Hurdles • Meeting weekly deadlines • Learning a new tool Adobe Captivate 4.0 • Time crunch • Converting lessons and coming up with ideas in the end because of time we stuck with a heavy text based model • Recruiting pre-testers to thoroughly test the course before the go live date

  16. Lessons Learned • Online is not the same as face to face • What’s in it for me? This is ultimately what students want to know what is in it for them when they register for a class • Even though face to face
