  1. Innovating a Real-Time Student-Faculty Partnership of Practice in Medical Education:Interactive Case-Based Online Network (ICON)

ICON Approach to Learning • Partnership of practice that places the patient at the center of investigative inquiry. • Continuous integration of the case-based learning process. • Student-directed communication with patients and case characters. • Faculty assume the role of clinician and patients. • Cases occur in real-time as events unfold. • User-driven urgency in learning.

  3. ICON_Human Nervous System and Behavior (HNSB) 2004 • ICON scaled to n=32 students, n=4 tutors, n=26 faculty (HMS, FAS, HSDM, HSPH, HBS). • One ICON tutorial (n=8 students) in each of the 4 Academic Societies. • Customized user-driven case modules. • Centralized content-driven case modules. • New investment in interfaculty development, relational database and resource integration, user-driven interface design and development.

  4. Results • Positive feedback and excitement from both students and faculty. • Active participation of faculty in the student’s learning. • Seed change in the way information is presented to students. • Inside look into how students develop confidence and cognitive abilities to think through problems and communicate with patients and colleagues. • Different patient outcomes among tutorial groups depending on student’s decision making and team management. • Substantial efficiency advantages achieved by sharing resources among Academic Societies.
