  1. Building Interest in Manufacturing Careers through Partnerships to Deliver Family Engineering Megan Schrauben Michigan Department of Education Michigan STEM Partnership Bill Rayl Academy of Manufacturing Careers Jackson Area Manufacturers Association The Enterprise Group

  2. 33 Michigan Math& Science Centershttp://www.mimathandscience.org/

  3. Michigan STEM Partnership — 5 regional hubs • Michigan is divided into 5 hubs. • Local working group for each hub is made up of employers and educators who determine local STEM outreach activities. http://mistempartnership.com/about/

  4. 2011-13 STEM Hub Focus: Family Engineering • Chose to focus on dissemination of Family Engineering Program statewide. http://www.familyengineering.org/ Michigan Tech University co-authors, Joan Chadde and Dr. Neil Hutzler , conducted two training workshops for all Math/Science Centers. • Generous grant funding supported training, purchase of family engineering starter kits, and conducting family engineering events from • Math/Science Centers Network and the MI STEM Partnership • Square One Education Network • National Defense Education Fund

  5. 58 Family Engineering Events held statewidesponsored by Math/Science Centers • Families discover the fun of engineering by doing hands-on activities together! • Activities provide engineering challenges that introduce families to a variety of engineering fields. • Family Engineering book made it easy for Math/Science Centers to plan and host events. • Events held at a variety of venues

  6. Assembly Line (family engineering activity) • Organize into groups of 4-6… • How quickly can a team of workers assemble a product? • Family members, working as a team, try to create the optimal assembly line to assemble a ballpoint pen in the shortest time. • This is a competition--- a race against other groups! • Reorganize, figure out a more efficient process, listen to ideas from your group members • There will be two trials. • Practice your solution-based thinking---systems engineering! • Parents will see that their children are capable… catch kids while they are young and keep them engaged!

  7. Value of Partnerships—working together • Can accomplish more • Spreads STEM throughout the community • Your resources stretch further • Get involved! • Join Math/Science Center advisory committee • Join a STEM hub • Support students’ STEM learning—offer students internships, make classroom presentations, sponsor a STEM event, join the discussion! • Cultivate relationships and imagine the possibilities!

  8. Help encourage kids to pursue STEM careers with Family Engineering! http://www.familyengineering.org/ Megan Schraubenschraubenm1@michigan.gov • Integrated Education Consultant, Curriculum & Instruction Office of Education Improvement and Innovation, MI Dept. of Educ. • Past-Chair, Michigan STEM Partnership • Past-Director MI Math & Science Network Bill Raylbrayl@enterprisegroup.org • Jackson Area Manufacturers Association • Academy for Manufacturing Careers
