  4. Format • Pentameter • 5 metrical feet • 2 syllables each • 10 total syllables • Iambic • Pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables. • Unstressed and then stressed • da DUM da DUM da DUM da DUM da DUM • Closely resembles human speech

  7. William Shakespeare • Born in 1564, his actual birthdate is unknown, in Stratford upon Avon, Warwickshire, England. • Produced most of his work between 1589-1613. • Othello, Hamlet, King Lear, and Macbeth are considered his greatest works.

  8. Rip Off • “The Tragical History of Romeus and Juliet” by Aurthur Brook was written in 1562. • It’s pretty much the same thing minus Benvolio and Mercutio. • “Pyramus and Thisbe” is pretty much the same thing too and it was published in Ovid’s Metamorphoses. • The Ephesiacaby Xenophon of Ephesus, written in the 3rd century is very similar as well.

  9. The most excellent and lamentable tragedy of Romeo and Juliet • This play is a tragedy. It is not a story of love. • Themes: Love (brutality/forcefulness/violence), Individual vs. Society, Fate (it’s inescapable) • Motifs: Time, Light and Darkness (duality) • Symbols: Queen Mab, Poison, Thumb Biting

Not so juicy stuff • Setting: • Verona • During the Renaissance (14th or 15th century) • Tone: • Shifts from lighthearted comedy to sudden tension very frequently • Violent, ecstatic passion to abject misery • Duration: • The play takes place over the course of 4 or 5 days and time is referenced no fewer than 103 times to reinforce how quickly the events move.

The real tragedy • Social Class is reinforced throughout the play. • Romeo and Juliet and their families and kin speak with elevated language. • Romeo uses Petrarchan sonnets when expressing his old love, and switches to contemporary sonnets for his new love. • Juliet speaks plainly to Romeo with monosyllables but more formally to Paris. • Friar Lawrence speaks in sermons and sententiae. • Nurse speaks colloquially. • Juliet is a female; it doesn’t matter that we don’t understand why, the point is she cannot leave with Romeo. She must obey her parents. • Romeo is a male; his behavior is dictated by masculine codes of honor as much as Juliet’s is by feminine codes of purity. • The musicians lower class commentary puts the tragedy into perspective.

  12. The Real tragedy • Romeo and Juliet are the true protagonists. • Considering we all know how it ends, who might the antagonist be?
