  2. Objectives • Describe the population whose properties are to be analyzed. • Organize and present data.

  3. Key Terms • Statistics: an area in mathematics where we are interested in gathering, analyzing, presenting, and making predictions from numerical information. • Data (Distribution): a collection of numerical information. • Population: entire collection of items that is the focus of the survey. • Sample: a subset of the population. • Biased: sample does not accurately reflect the population as a whole with regard to data gathered. • Selection Bias: how you chose the people to participate in the survey. • Leading Question Bias: the way a question is asked in a survey.

Key Terms • Frequency Distribution: A set of data listed with their frequencies. • Relative Frequency Distribution: contains the percent of time that each item occurred. • Frequency Table: a table that lists items and number of times it occurs • Bar Graph: a graph that compares different amounts using bars. • Histogram: a special type of bar graph used to graph frequency distribution. • Stem-and-Leaf Display: a method of presenting data in a graphical formal, similar to a histogram. It is used to assist in visualizing the shape of a distribution.
