  1. Wikis; a brave new world for the 21st century learner and their teachersDawn Morleydmorley@bournemouth.ac.uk

  2. The introduction of elearning into the first year of a new preregistration nursing curriculum at Bournemouth University

  3. The first big question! What does the “e” part of the learning add for the student? (Mayes and De Frietas 2004)

  4. What type of elearning can be used? • Online learning. The student receives and may use materials they access. • Web 2.0 tools eg wikis, blogs, forums. The students interact with others in the chosen medium and their learning may advance more independently and collaboratively.

  5. What did we hope that the students would gain from elearning? Accessibility to an “anytime, anywhere” (JISC report2 2005) learning Early control and ownership for their learning by promoting a socio cultural constructivist pedagogy (Mayes and De Frietas 2004) Establishment and augmentation of group identity, networking and peer support A favourable introduction to Web 2.0 tools

  6. Preparation for the introduction of wikis Investigation of the feasibility of wikis within myBU Setting up of a staff wiki as a portal for developing ideas and materials Division of 11 student seminar groups into 4 elearning groups Student induction into netiquette and the use of wikis

  7. Were the original aims of the elearning met?

  8. Accessibility to “anytime, anywhere” learning

  9. Early control and ownership for learning by promoting a socio cultural constructivist pedagogy I asked a 46 year old female what her opinions are of people with mental health problems and learning disabilities. She said that she did not feel intimidated by mental health patients however she would feel scared if they were showing alarming behaviour towards or around her. She said she sympathizes with people with learning difficulties. She said it makes her feel sad about all the stigma and name calling they suffer. When she does see a person who has learning difficulties and is in a wheelchair it makes her look upon her own life and make her realise how lucky she is to be able to live an independent life. (Wiki contribution, First year student nurse)

  10. Establishment and augmentation of group identity, networking and peer support

  11. C: hey girls how do I get the article up that you are both talking about? I am really confused :s lol I have looked every where and I want to write on this page but don't want to if I don't know what I am talking about :) lol Thank you x G: Hey, you have to go to sociology, then to unit materials, then click on week three (week 14) thenthere is a link NHS.medicineandhealth click on that and it should take you to the article. :)  (Wiki contributions, First year student nurses)

  12. A favourable introduction to Web 2.0 tools

  13. “do it, it helps to learn more, breaks the ice, and helps form friendships” “not everyone contributed and not really commented on each others contributions so no debate. Everyone hated doing it and moaned and whined about it being a waste of time” “only confusion through the layout of it, once we understood how to use it, it worked fine”

  14. “brought the group closer together through the wiki” “elearning isn’t a good form of elearning so it can’t be improved!” “use it – it’s a really good way to keep up with the subject and encourages extra reading” “not everyone accessed it/ used it, caused bad feeling amongst some members of the group. Personally I felt sad as I felt and hoped that they would gain all the benefits we gained from it”

  15. And the final word ….. Hey I am loving this wiki it is better than facebook and, like tattoos very addictive (Wiki contribution, first year student)

  16. Salmon’sfive stage approach Provides a simple and practical approach to the design and implementation of “etivities” highlighting potential problems along the way.

  17. Salmon’s five stage approach
