  1. Summary of last workshop and recent updates Bruno Muratori Cockcroft Institute and Daresbury Laboratory, STFC 02/12/09

  2. Last Workshop Aims Identify & describe procedures for EMMA commissioning Help prepare programme of work Help develop online models where required Help interpret the data & measurements correctly Begin to lay out a commissioning plan Generate interest in active involvement in commissioning process Have an estimate of the available resources

  3. Last workshop talks & discussions ALICE experience – further strengthened recently with CBS ! Susan, Yuri Experience from commissioning other FFAGs Shinji First thoughts on EMMA commissioning Shinji, Eberhard Unique turn-by-turn BPM design for EMMA ring Alex, Shane Experiments to be done with EMMA Scott, Eberhard Started list of priorities of what we need to do in EMMA Scott, Susan, everyone Orbit correction (vertical) David

  4. Last workshop talks & discussions Overview of progress with EMMA RF system Alan Manipulation of EMMA field maps Yoel Codes available to model the EMMA ring → online model Bruno, everyone Initial thoughts on EMMA control system Adrian, Graham Timing issues and injection onto the closed orbit Shane Beginnings of best ‘first experiment’ & when / how to claim success Shinji, everyone

  5. What should the bunch charge be ? 15, 30 and 60 pC How do we set Dx & D’x at the entrance of EMMA ? will need dedicated procedure to be looked at by me Do we need to run with 1 pC at all ? no Which model is the best / easiest to use as online model (ZGOUBI for now but wraparound will work on others) standard offline model ZGOUBI / MMCA / GPT / PTC / Scott / Shinji / FFEMMAG How do we crest / zero-cross cavities in the EMMA ring ? Tracking in ‘off-line’ models (e.g. Scott’s, GPT & others) to be benchmarked against each other for nominal parameters (at least) Some of the Questions Raised

  6. So we use ZGOUBI and link it with Kiril’s script or equivalent and develop online model What is the best way to zero the dispersion on exit of the EMMA ring ? Procedure to be developed by me Do we want to introduce collimators in a region of high dispersion ? where ? any other suggestions to reduce energy spread (first the need should be demonstrated) ? Look at ALICE injector to see what possible minimum energy spread is What data do we want displayed by the BPM signals ? Every turn or just one ? Both can be done Which BPMs are crucial ? we will only ‘card’ about half of them at first, so which are best ? tracking in off-line models should answer this Some of the Questions Raised

  7. How do we change the frequency in the cavities while setting up the new phase automatically ? This should be possible (RF Group) Does this still hold if we change the energy ? Yes How is the best way to do orbit correction as we accelerate ? David Kelliher will look at this in detail as well as how to do orbit correction when some of the BPMs are missing What should be our first run ? ‘Muon experiment’ & demonstration of some acceleration – a detailed procedure should be written for this When can we claim victory ? When above has been achieved  Some of the Questions Raised

  8. Some of the Questions Raised

  9. Collaborations (CERN) (Eberhard Keil) John Adams Institute (Ken Peach, Holger, Suzie et al.) Imperial College (Jaroslav Pasternak, Morteza Aslaninejad et al.) RAL (Shinji Machida, David Kelliher et al.) TRIUMF (Shane Koscielniak et al.) BNL (Scott Berg) Fermilab (Carol Johnstone et al.) LPSC (François Meot) Liverpool University (Andy Wolski, Kai Hock, David, Mark et al.) Manchester University (Roger Barlow, Hywel, Sam, Jimmy et al.) Instrumentation Technologies (Carlo Bocchetta et al.) Apologies to anyone I have missed 

  10. EMMA Task List On CONFORM server Local meetings every two weeks (PhD’s / post-docs / etc.) Phone meetings within the UK every two weeks Semi-regular updates given at EMMA collaboration meetings My notes from every meeting are also on CONFORM Please check progress and give me feedback when possible Goes through all known tasks / steps required for EMMA commissioning Monitors progress of PhD students and makes sure there are no significant overlaps in the work people do

  14. Expectations from this workshop To finalise the work which still remains to be done To create a commissioning document which everyone can refer to from this workshop to be subsequently updated or replaced with newer document(s) To create a list of parameters of every aspect of the machine (this was started see my talk at the Zgoubi-day yesterday) so we can Compare models Be aware of all the constraints Know exactly what to put into our simulations Get feedback on the work which has been done so far and the progress made since the last workshop (right direction ?) Answer some of the remaining & recent questions listed in the next slides ...

  15. Injection and extraction How do we set Dx & D’x at the entrance of EMMA ? What is the best way to zero the dispersion on exit of the EMMA ring ? Do we want to introduce collimators in a region of high dispersion ? where ? any other suggestions to reduce energy spread ? Maybe this can be introduced in an upgrade ? How do we compensate for septum stray fields ? Dipole superimposed on septum ? Use quadrupoles either side of septum ? Other ? How do we compensate for kicker stray fields, ringing ? Which program do we use to model: ALICE2EMMA, Septum, Kicker2, EMMA ring & extraction ? What happens when dispersion is not exactly zero in extraction ? Any other issues ?

  16. Online modelling Which model is the best / easiest to use as online model (hopefully this we have already answered !) standard offline model Zgoubi / MMCA / GPT / FFEMMAG ? Are all the elements we require in the EPICS database ? What data do we want displayed by the BPM signals & how ? Which BPMs are crucial ? Do we want to do any dedicated code comparison ? Can we afford the luxury of several off-line lattice programs for EMMA ? Who decides which data-sets to try on EMMA and how ? Which modifications (if any) do we wish to be made to Zgoubi or pyZgoubi ? Any other issues ?

  17. Diagnostics & RF How do we crest / zero-cross cavities in the EMMA ring ? What data do we want displayed by the BPM signals & how ? Which BPMs are crucial given that we do not have all of them ? How are RF systems synchronized and which is the best set-up for our first run? Are we happy with the ALICE / EMMA synchronisation ? In particular when the frequencies differ Is there any way we can test this on ALICE ? How do we change the frequency in the cavities while setting up the new phase automatically ? Does this still hold if we change the energy ? Any other issues ?

  18. Do we get the time from BPMs, WCMs or other ? How do we do ‘beam based alignment’ on EMMA SVD ? let beam stabilise ? what does this mean exactly ? other ? Best method for tune measurements ? How do we do orbit correction as we accelerate ? should we try ? How do we go onto the orbit ? Do we map out single energies first ? When should we accelerate ? Should we consider installing read-back systems for quads in future ? Any other issues ? Measurements

  19. Still lots of work to be done ! Expect requests for help soon ... Thanks to all the participants for making the last workshop a success  Please help me make sure this one is just as good, if not better !
