HOT ROC: Quote Analysis “You do not take a person who for years has been hobbled by chains and liberate him, bring him up to the starting line of a race and then say, ‘you’re free to compete with all the others,’ and still justly believe that you have been completely fair. Thus it is not enough just to open the gates of opportunity. All our citizens must have the ability to walk through those gates.” –President Lyndon B. Johnson Do you agree or disagree? Why? Please explain.

  3. College Admissions • Read Pg. 601-603 in your textbook. Please define Preferential Treatment and Regents of the University of California v. Bakke • You are being asked to play the role of a college board Snobfarm University! With your three group members, you must agree as a group on which student you will admit to Snobfarm, which student you will waitlist and which 2 students you will reject! Remember, all students have met your qualifications for enrollment! • Write ½ page explaining your decision!

Affirmative Action • Affirmative Action: a policy of actively seeking to increase the number of minorities in colleges and the workforce • This is also called preferential treatment • UC Regents v. Bakke: white student Allan Bakke sues UC for reverse discrimination • Court decides race CAN be used as ONE of the criteria, but NOT the ONLY criterion and racial quotas are unconstitutional

  5. Affirmative Action: Yay or Nay? Yay! Nay! Demoralizes minorities because it implies certain races are inferior Encourages minorities to feel like victims rather than feel empower Creating more inequality based on preferential treatment does not make up for past inequalities • There is still widespread discrimination against minorities and legal protections are needed • Works to heal society by fast-tracking minorities into positions of status
