  1. Jesus Confronts Evil Luke 4:31-37

  2. Luke 4:31-34 31 And he went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And he was teaching them on the Sabbath, 32 and they were astonished at his teaching, for his word possessed authority. 33 And in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice, 34 “Ha! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.”

  3. Matthew 4:24 24 So his fame spread throughout all Syria, and they brought him all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and pains, those oppressed by demons, epileptics, and paralytics, and he healed them.

  4. What is the problem? Secular Humanist Worldview • Evil - No transcendent evil • Man – good by nature • Problem – environment is flawed • Solution – fix the environment Problem with this approach • Fails to account for magnitude of evil. • Demonizes all but the demons…

  5. If only there were evil people somewhere insidiously committing evil deeds and it were necessary only to separate them from the rest of us and destroy them. But the line dividing good and evil cuts through the heart of every human being. And who is willing to destroy a piece of his own heart. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

  6. Ephesians 6:12-13 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.

  7. Demonic Strategy (Genesis 3) Realm of the Mind • Deny truth of God’s Word. • Deny reality of death. • Appeal to man’s desire for power (control). • A few Scriptures: 2 Corinthians 4:4, Ephesians 2:2, James 3:15, and 1 John 4:1-6

  8. Luke 4:35-38 35 But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm. 36 And they were all amazed and said to one another, “What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!” 37 And reports about him went out into every place in the surrounding region.

  9. John 8:31-36 31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free…” 35 The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
