  1. Ancestor Veneration in China Joel Kuruvilla AP World History 2nd Period

  2. Ancestral veneration in Chinese culture is the practice of living family members who try to provide a deceased family member with continuous happiness and well-being in the afterlife. It is a way of continuing to show respect towards them.

  3. It is based on the idea of filial piety which was put forth by Confucias. Filial piety is the concept of remaining loyal to parents as their child.

  4. Spirit Money Prayer Prayer was usually performed at the household altar in a separate room containing the spirits of their ancestors. The oldest male would speak to the alter on a daily basis and possibly pray to the spirit to do something for the family. Spirit money is money that does not have value but is symbolic of actual money. When it is burned at an alter or tomb is it believed that its value will be transported to the ancestors in the spirit world.
