  2. Background information (1-12) • Audience: disciples and others (1-2) • Tuesday of last week, in temple • Severe language. Mt.12:20 • From debate and parable (ch.21-22), Jesus moves to direct attack • Pharisees move from words to murder • Not all Pharisees were alike (Jn.3; Ph.3)

People had to listen to teachers • He accepts their function, but warns: • If they correctly explain Moses, obey • But not if they: Add traditions(Mt.15; Mk.12:38) Subtract obedience(Mt.23:3) “When in the pulpit [they] preach...so well that it is a pity they should ever come out; but when out of the pulpit, [they] live ...so ill that it is a pity they should ever come in”
