  2. Problem • Excessive paper waste on my Campus Kingsborough Community College • Have you ever noticed how much paper we waste in our daily lives?

  3. Why is this happening? • Students may not be aware of the environmental consequences of their actions. • Students lack of social responsibility. • Many students believe that paying tuition and technology fees justifies their behavior.

  4. Facts • Throwing paper is throwing trees. Paper is made out of pulp derived from trees. • Americans throw away enough office paper annually to build a wall 12 feet high stretching from Los Angeles to New York City. • It takes about 17 full-grown trees to make a ton of paper. • One tree can filter up to 60 pounds of pollutants from the air each year. • “When we extract cellulose from wood to make paper we cut down forest but we use only 20 to 25 % of the trees, discarding the remaining 75 to 80% as waste” Capra

  5. Objectives • Reduce paper waste in KBCC computer labs. • Raise awareness among college students about how our actions affect our environment. • Foster social responsibility. • Sensitize and inspire students.

  6. Four Golden Rules • Re-think if you really need to print. • Print exclusively the papers you need. • Use both sides of the paper. • Keep your information digital. Do not print everything.

  7. Action Items • Monthly letters or messages to all KBCC students via students KBCC e-mail accounts. • Articles in “Scepter” School Newspaper. • School radio station messages.

  8. “The forest fall victim to our passion and comfort and inability to control our numbers. We have taken it upon ourselves to decide how much forest the planet needs and how much we need. Godspeed for the day when the forest will decide the issue of our numbers.” Anatoly Lebedev
