Fun and games with Activity Kits • Today, we are going to explore 2 more Activity Kits: • Nutrition Games • Tossing and Catching • Why use Activity Kits? • Fun! • Increase awareness of nutrition and physical activity (PA) • Accumulate daily requirements for active play, structured PA and moderate to vigorous physical PA • Develop and practice motor skills • Practice cooperation and team-building • Support critical thinking skills

Activity Kits: What do you need? • Overview, instructions and activity cards: • Nutrition Games and Tossing and Catching are in your binder materials for Learning Session 5. • Moving and Dancing materials are in Learning Session 2. • Print a set of activity cards, front and back, from your binder • A shoebox-sized plastic box to store activity cards and the equipment you will need to do the activities: • Nutrition uses 3 activity cards and plastic fruits and vegetables • Tossing and Catching uses 3 activity cards and bean bags, cones, and beach balls • Moving and Dancing (materials in Learning Session 2 Materials Tab) uses 3 activity cards and bandanas, Barnyard Dance book, and a Shake It Up CD (or other music CD of your choice)

Tossing and Catching! • Builders and Bulldozers • How do you think the children in your preschool program would respond to this game? • How would you need to adapt it to meet the needs of your children? • What early learning standards of curriculum objectives do these activities support? • Beach Ball High • How do you think the children in your preschool program would respond to this game? • How would you need to adapt it to meet the needs of your children? • What early learning standards or curriculum objectives do these activities support?

  6. Activity Kits: Discussion • What did you think? Were these fun? • Let’s talk about any barriers or concerns you have about any of these activities. Maybe someone has a solution! • What would happen if you asked your preschool teachers to introduce the kits to children and store them on a visible shelf in the classroom? • What other activities could you create using the materials from these two kits?

  7. Activity Kits: Bringing it all back home! We mean “bringing it all back home” literally! • Roll out the kits to staff as part of your “homework” for this session. • Think about using some of these activities to jump start or wrap up your staff meetings. • Consider using the kits at an event for families to show them how much fun moving and playing can be! • Use the ideas to create “Healthy Homework” that children do at home with their families over the weekend. • Other ideas?
