Economic Context Remittances 50-75% of salaries • Kiribati, seafaring remittances 25% of GNP • Tuvalu seafaring remittances 30% of GNP • Remittances in 2003: • Fijian seafarers supported 6 family members • Tuvaluan seafarers supported 7 family members • I-Kiribati seafarers supported 8 family members • PNG, fisheries, especially tuna, has increased in export value each year since 1998 • PNG collects about 45% of all access or license fees paid to Pacific Island countries

  8. Why Are Pacific Seafarers at Risk? “Seafaring Lifestyle” • Low condom use • Lack of knowledge • Excessive alcohol use • “Knowing” partner to be “clean” • Personal dislike

  9. Seafaring Lifestyle:Alcohol Abuse • Alcohol abuse • Alcohol precedes every sexual activity • “drinking too much alcohol” given by seafarers themselves: • 79% of Tuvaluan sailors, • 79% of I-Kiribati sailors • 81% of Fijian sailors

  10. Seafaring Lifestyle: Risky Sex • Commercial sex • Multiple sex partners • Up to 20 partners per year • Group sex

  11. Other factors that contribute to risk: • Economics • Gender attitudes • Language and literacy • Lore and miscommunication

  12. Pacific Seafarers & Fishers: Information Needs IEC materials are available but not successful. Seafarers & fishers complain: Too large Lack of real-life images of symptoms Produced in English rather than local languages
