  1. Silent Reading For 15 minutes, you will be reading your novels or textbook

  2. Current Events • Vancouver Sun What are some current events and news stories that worth discussing?

  3. The Magna Carta: “The Great Charter” King John II signing the Magna Carta in 1215

  4. The Magna Carta: What Was It? • Video on the Crusades • The Magna Carta Travels

  5. The Great Charter • Signed by the British King, John II in Runnymede, On Google Maps • Forced by his Barons to sign the Charter: which limited his authority and rule over them and the people of the British Empire • He now had to answer for his actions and could do whatever he pleased: the barons could overrule him

  6. Why was the Magna Carta significant? • Tell me why you think it was so significant? • Limited the King’s power… Had this ever been done before? • In doing this, the Magna Carta made it so that the King needed an adequate reason to arrest someone, or to punish them… Essentially, the Magna Carta was the first time we see human rights and power being taken away from the Monarch (King or Queen)  New Rights and Freedoms • Because the Barons outnumbered the King, and their relationship was strained (as seen in the video) what do you think might happen if the King did not sign the Magna Carta?

  7. Magna Carta/Feudalism Activity • Pick a name, that will determine who you are in feudalistic society • Then we will arrange our classroom to represent the feudalistic times
