  2. Influences • The Bible was a model for Puritan writing. Each person had an individual journey to salvation. They connected their life with biblical events.

  3. Puritan writings described the workings of God.

  4. Puritan Belief • Puritans believed that one was already predetermined as a child of God or the devil. They believed God decides what happens to people. Puritans felt they could figure out who was a child of God and who belonged to the devil based on people’s actions.

  5. Non-believers • Those who did not closely follow God’s teachings were shunned or persecuted. This was one of the reasons for the Salem Witch Trials.

  6. The Literature • Diaries and histories were the most common forms of literary expression in Puritan Literature.

  7. Puritans favored a plain style of writing. They admired the clarity of expression and avoided complicated figures of speech. Love is like a rose. Love is good.
