Introduction to AASA Non-profit International Organization related to S&T Established in 2000 - to promote cooperation in S&T among Asian and Australasian Countries - To contribute to the development of member-countries by providing advice and countermeasures on issues related to science and technology through international cooperation. 25 Member-Academies representing 25 Countries Member-Academies in Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, China, Georgia, Indonesia, Iran, Israel, Kazakhstan, Korea, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Russia, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Thai, Turkey, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Jordan and Saudi Arabia Distribution of AASA Member-Academies

  6. AASA and Other Organizations • AASA is not a stand-alone association. It is cooperating with many other regional and international organizations. • We do believe AASA should work closely with IAP, one of the world's largest academy associations especially helping to developing countries. • Attending IAP EC and presenting AASA'a activity report will strengthen the links between AASA and IAP

AASA Meetings General Assembly and International Symposium Date : October 11~12, 2005 Venue : Seoul, Korea Host : The Korean Academy of Science and Technology Theme: Science and Technology of Water Participation: Members: Representatives from 17 member-academies Major Guests: Dr. Yee-Cheong Lee, Secretary General of FASAS / Prof. José Tundisi, chair of IAP Water Program / Myung Oh, Deputy Prime Minister of Rep. of Korea Major Agenda: Joint Programs, Selection of AASA meetings to be awarded IAP Subsidy

AASA Meetings and Symposium is heldon October 11 - 14 in Seoul To enhance the network and cooperation among scientific communities, Secretary General of FASAS (Federation of Asian Scientific Academies and Societies), the chair of IAP Water Program and President of Science Council of Japan (SCJ) and Vice President of Science Council of Asia are invited to AASA GA meetings. Secretary General of FASAS and the chair of IAP Water Program gave short presentations at the AASA GA Meeting.

  10. Programs to be Awarded IAP Subsidy One of the main agenda of GA meeting was‘Selection of Programs to be Awarded IAP Subsidy.’ IAP provided AASA grants for AASA’s capacity building. To promote activities of AASA member academies and corporation among them, the subsidy provided by IAP will be given to the selected projects. In this connection, proposals for financial support for scientific meetings related to AASA programs were submitted. AASA Board considered those proposals and the following programs were awarded IAP subsidy.

AASA Meetings Experts’ Meeting on Cultural Heritage Date : February 9-12, 2006 Venue : Istanbul, Turkey Host : The Turkish Academy of Sciences Theme: Management of Cultural Heritage in Asian Countries Participation: Experts from 7 member-academies Major Activities: Presentation of Country Profile on Cultural Heritage, Discussion on the report and proposals for future collaboration

AASA Meetings Workshop on Arsenic Contamination and Safe Water Date : December 11-13, 2005 Venue : Dhaka, Bangladesh Host : The Bangladesh Academy of Sciences Theme: Arsenic Contamination and Safe Water Participation: 60 foreign delegates and 40 local experts Major Activities: 27 papers were presented Discussion and formulation of the recommendation

Other Activities Participation to the IAP EC meeting AASA Secretary General participated IAP EC meeting held in China on October 16~17, 2005 - Delivered a presentation on AASA Activity - Discussed on future Cooperation between AASA and FASAS: Participation to each other’s GA and Joining Scientific Programs are considered. - Cooperation between AASA and FASAS will be further discussed at IAP EC meeting in Brazil
