  2. What is guided reading? Guided reading is a strategy where students read a teacher-selected text in a small group. The teacher provides explicit teaching and support for reading increasingly challenging texts.

  3. How does guided reading fit into the reading workshop? Reading Workshop for Kindergarten has 4 parts 1. Focus (Mini) Lesson 2. Guided Reading 3. Stations 4. Reflection/Debrief

  8. What do I do with my students at guided reading who are performing at different levels? Three Levels Early Emergent Pre-A

  9. Pre-A Trace an Alphabet Book Tracing the Alphabet is the fastest and easiest way for students to learn their letters even if they are learning English. Students knowing at least 16 letters took 1 months of daily tracing to learn the letters. Students knowing between 6 and 15 letters took 2 months of daily tracing to learn the letters. Students knowing fewer than 5 letters took 3 months of daily tracing to learn the letters. • Students who cannot identify at least 40 upper and lower case letters • Completed with an EA, Parent volunteer, upper grade mentor, etc. • Completed every day • Specific steps – pp. 57-59

  11. Pre-A Working with Letters and Names Before • (3-4 minutes) • Name activities (1 min) • Eight ways of working with letters (2 min) • Letter formation (1 min) The activities go into the ABC Station for students to practice putting together, matching, sorting, etc.

  12. Pre-A Working With Sounds Before • Choose 1 • (2-3 minutes) • Clapping Syllables • Working with Rhymes • Picture Sorts Picture cards go into the Word Workfor students to practice syllables, rhymes, and picture sorts.

  13. Pre-A Working with Books During • (5 minutes) • Picture walk • Choral read • Students read on own • 1-2 Teaching Points The book goes into the Library Station for students to practice reading.

  14. Pre-A Interactive Writing • (5 minutes) • Teacher tells a simple sentence about book using high frequency words • Students repeat sentence • Teacher draws a line for each word on sentence strip as she says the word in sentence. • Students help write the sentence on sentence strip. Other students practice letter on alphabet chart • Cut up the sentence. Give each student one or more words. Have students put sentence back together. After The sentences go into the Word Work Station for students to practice putting together and reading.
