Measles Elimination status in the U.S. • Between Jan-Sept 2019, 1,249 U.S. cases were reported • 31 states • New York State Department announced no active cases of measles as of October 3rd, 2019 • More than 42 days have passed without report of a new case. • 75% of this years cases are linked to New York City and New York State outbreaks The U.S. still holds it’s status of having eliminated measles!

  3. There are a total of 17 cases investigated by LAC as of 10/10/19 *Alameda County includes two health departments that report cases separately: Alameda County and Berkeley City. Los Angeles County includes three health departments that report cases separately: Los Angeles County, Pasadena City, and Long Beach City.

LAC Measles Cases • This is an increase of 5 cases since the last ICLAC meeting on July 11th, 2019. • 15 (88%) cases had unknown, under or non-vaccination status. • This mirrors the national statistic of 89% (MMWR, Vol. 68, 10/4/19) • 12 cases were directly or indirectly linked to international travel. • Defined as at least part of the exposure period occurring outside of the U.S.

A New Normal • As of October 10 , 2019 there have been 1,317 confirmed, probable and suspect cases compared to 318 cases for 2018 (provisional data). • These cases are highly vaccinated but may fall in the cohort which received the acellular vaccine . • We are seeing a population that is very socially active with high levels of participation in extracurricular activities.

A New Normal • Managing pertussis requires collaboration between LAC, providers and the public. • What is our role as public health ambassadors in educating the public about the nature of these diseases and their vaccines? • Outreach to community partners: • Pediatricians • School districts • Who else?
