  1. Representative Fraction (Ratio Scale)

  2. The third type of scale in Geography is Representative Fraction. • -A Representative Fraction appears at the bottom of a map, below the line scale • eg. 1: 5 000 000

  3. What this means is that 1 cm on a map represents 5 000 000 cm on the ground. This is, of course too many cm to count. We need to change it to kilometres (KM). It is easy, just eliminate 5 Zeros. So, 1: 5 000 000 becomes 1: 5 000 000 THUS, it is now a statement scale, 1 cm = 50 Km

  4. Change the following from R.F. to Statement Scale • 1: 1 000 000 1cm = ____________ km • 1: 50 000 000 1cm = ____________ km • 1: 500 000 1cm = ____________ km • 1: 250 000 1cm = ____________ km • 1:25 000 1cm = ____________ km

  5. Answers • 1: 1 000 000 1cm = ____10_____ km • 1: 50 000 000 1cm = _____500___ km • 1: 500 000 1cm = ______5____ km • 1: 250 000 1cm = _____2.5___ km • 1:25 000 1cm = ______.25__ km
