Objectives with the training Create a critical mass of young teachers and researchers at collaborating institutions dedicated to developing integrated, livestock-based smallholder systems focused on sustainable use of renewable natural resources Improve research and teaching facilities at the collaborating institutions

  3. Why is it important? Need professionals founded on science-based knowledge to; - transfer advice to extension workers and/or farmers - provide information to decision makers - solve local and/regional problems - take part in the international discussions

  8. Regional Master of Science course 4 MSc Courses 2001-2010 (regional, 2 years) Lectures around 30 credits, research project 30 credits (14 months) Courses given at 6 centres in each of the 4 countries (students travel!) Emphasis on problem based teaching (practical and theoretical)

  18. Achievements? 61 students from the 4 countries received MSc degree from SLU! 32% Cambodia 24% Lao PDR 34% Vietnam 11% Thailand

  19. International MSc program of Animal Production at Cantho University started 2010 with 11 students

  20. Researchers

  21. On average 36% of the students were female Many of the 61 MSc graduates between 2003-2010 were/are registered as PhD students in Europe or in south east Asia

  22. 23 doctors graduated 2001-2011 at SLU (sandwich model, with research done at home institution) 9 PhD students are now registered at SLU (Dept. of Animal Nutrition and Management) AND all of them will defend in 2012

  23. Many qualified scientists at PhD and Associate Professor level in the region!

  26. Associate partner in an Erasmus-Mundus application to EU (2012) together with SLU, Ghent Univ. (main applicant) and Göttingen Univ. -CelAgrid -NIAS -Cantho University And univ in Uganda, Kenya, Burkina Faso
