Treaty of Paris • U.S and Spain met in Paris on October 1, 1898 • Conference discussed Cuba but main focus was Philippines • U.S wanted an introduction to new lands in the Pacific • Spanish argued Philippines surrendered and couldn’t be taken as a war conquest Click here for more Treaty Of Paris

  5. Treaty of Paris • Eventually U.S paid 20 million dollars for Philippines • U.S also gained control of Puerto Rico and Guam • Spain relinquished its claim To Cuba • Treaty was signed December 10, 1898 Click here for more motives

  14. Gaining Independence • Aguinaldo tried to fight a conventional war in February but changed to Guerilla Warfare in November 1899 • War was brutal on both sides and many lives were lost • Both sides were giving up • Americans held concentration camps Click here for more Gaining Independence

Gaining Independence • President William Howard Taft launched a pacification campaign that became known as the “policy of attraction” • Designed to get Filipino’s against Aguinaldo with ideas of giving them Independence • In 1907, the Philippines convened its first elected assembly • In 1916, the Jones Act promised the nation EVENTUAL independence • U.S granted independence in 1946 Click here for CORE TWO Click here for Jones Act

  16. Jones Act • On March 2, 1917, President Woodrow Wilson signed the Jones Act • Let Puerto Ricans become American citizens • Provided civil rights to the individual • Promised Philippines eventual independence Click here for CORE TWO

The Country Today • Population of over 98 million • 25% of the nation is in absolute poverty • Families are hungry • People don’t understand why they’re struggling so bad • Super Typhoon Haiyan only making things worse • Loss of many lives • People left with no food • Help isn’t coming Click here for Super Typhoon Click here for Conclusion

Super Typhoon Haiyan(Yolanda) • Loss of many people • Help still hasn’t reached some of the parts that need it the most • Aquino thought more people would have died, so he isn’t as worried • People are looking for missing members of there family • People are starving • Homes are destroyed Click here for Conclusion

  22. Conclusion • Never know if Philippines would have been better off under U.S control • Need someone to care about them • Better leadership • Something needs to be done about the poverty • They are not showing the world that they are able to self rule
