  3. Anticipatory Socialization • Process by which knowledge and skills are learned for future roles. • Rites of passage-What are some others that affect you?

  4. Timeline of Life • What are the major changes that take place at each stage? • Infancy and Childhood • Adolescence • Adulthood • Old Age • Death and Dying

  5. Assignment • Make a timeline of life itself. • Include “Anticipatory Socialization” events that define our life. • Must include AT LEAST 10 Events • Must have Pictures • Must be creative • Can be done in partners (no more than 2 people) or by yourself. • Worth 2 Assignment Grades (200 pts.) • Due Friday 9/16

  8. Courtship • What does courtship mean? • How do you go about “courting” someone? • What is the effect of mass media on courtship? • Come up with examples of courting with a partner • Who courts who? What is expected?

  10. Consider… • What is more popular today….dating or marriage? Why do you think? • Do you think people follow homogamy? (marrying those with similar characteristics)? • Why do YOU date/want to date/don’t want to date?

  12. Teen Sex • What are the consequences of teens having sex? • In the late 1990’s, AIDS was the 7th leading cause of death among people aged 15-24 • What are others?

  13. Drugs • Drug use happens too… • Why?

  14. Teen Suicide • Emile Durkheim has most comprehensive study of suicide to date! • Says those with low social integration have higher probability of suicide • What is social integration • Attachment to social groups or society (sense of belonging)

  15. How can we help? • Follow the signs! • Alcohol/Drug Use (Heavy) • Triggering Events (death of family member, fights, unwanted pregnancy, etc.) • Age (more common over 13) • Sex/Gender(males are more likely to succeed) • Pop. Density-Less pop. Areas more likely to have suicide • Family relations (weakened social bonds) • Cluster Effect (Domino Effect…1 does it more follow)
