Cornell Notes • Devised in the 1950s by Walter Pauk, an education professor at Cornell University • Pauk advocated its use in his best-selling How to Study in College, but its use has spread most rapidly in the past decade. • Has become the standard method in many colleges and most law schools

Cornell Notes • The 5 R’s of Note-taking • Record: Record meaningful facts, concepts, and ideas on the right; use shorthand, drawings, etc. • Reduce: As soon as possible after class summarize the facts/ideas; list key words, concepts, questions in the left column • Recite: Cover the right side, use the left as “flags” to help you recall information; verify w/the right • Reflect: Think about the subject; relate your notes to your experiences in class and your prior knowledge; find relationships • Review: Look over your notes again before the test; 2 short sessions is better than “cramming”

Lab Notebook Check • You are looking for: • Notebook covered and decorated (if not, it’s an automatic “1”) • Table of contents up-to-date (Genetics/Heredity) • Notes neat and up-to-date • At least two “Mustang Science Approved” stamps this grading period • Must have Cornell Notes summaries for a “3” • Remember: 3=WOW! 2=Good 1=Needs work 0=
