  1. Types of Reactions • Types of reactions video (4 min. animated) http://video.about.com/chemistry/What-Are-Types-of-Chemical-Reactions.htm • Types of reactions with actual video footage http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-HHvx1VC_8&feature=watch-vrec • Types of reactions with balanced equations and “stick figures” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qQvDDL3zTk

  2. Chemical Reactions • A chemical reaction changes the properties and energy of the old substances into a new substance. • A chemical reaction involves a rearrangement of atoms. • Chemical Equations: Show Changes that take place in a chemical reaction. • EXAMPLE: AgNO3 (aq)+ NaCl (aq) AgCl(s) + NaNO3(aq) Reactants Yield Products • Reactants: The chemicals you start with • Products: The chemicals you end up with • Conservation of Mass: You must have the same amount of each element at the beginning and the end of a reaction. Elements cannot appear or disappear!

  3. Not ALL equations fit nicely into one of these categories! NOTE:

  4. Synthesis reaction: “Getting Together” Girl A + Boy B  Couple AB

  5. Synthesis reaction: A + B  AB Examples: 2 H2 + O2 2 H2O SO3 + H2O  H2SO4

  6. Decomposition reaction: “Breaking Up” Couple AB  Girl A + Boy B

  7. Decomposition reaction: AB  A + B Examples: 2 KClO3 2 KCl + 3 O2 2 H2O  2 H2 + O2

  8. Single displacement reaction: “Couple/Single Switcheroo” Couple AB + Boy C  Couple AC + Boy B

  9. Single displacement reaction: A + BC  AC + B Examples: Zn + Cu(NO3)2 Zn(NO3)2 + Cu

  10. Double displacement reaction: “Couple/Couple Switcheroo” Couple AB + Couple CD  Couple AD + Couple CB

  11. Double displacement reaction: AB + CD  AD + CB Examples: AgNO3 + NaCl  AgCl + NaNO3

  12. Combustion A combustible material + oxygen → carbon dioxide + water + energy

  13. Examples C10H8 + 12 O2 → 10 CO2 + 4 H2O

  14. Types of Equations - summary • Animation • examples

  15. identify the types of reactions CH4 + 2 O2 → CO2 + 2 H2O 3 NO  N2O + NO2 Na2CO3 + Ca(OH)2 CaCO3 + 2 NaOH 8 H2 + S8 8 H2S 2 Al2O3 + 3 C  4 Al + 3 CO2 combustion decomposition double displacement synthesis singledisplacement
