  2. Landforms

  3. The Seine River The Seine River is the largest in France. It runs 485 miles, flows directly through Parisand empties into the English Channel. The river is used for tourism purposes as well as boat tours. The Seine River is pictured in many famous paintings and has played a large role in history.

  4. Montmartre Hill Montmartre Hill is the highest point in Paris. It is 130 meters high and is where the Basilica of the Sacre Coeur is located. Montmartre Hill is also known for being the artistic center of Paris. Other than Montmartre Hill, Paris is generally flat land.

  6. Global Overview Paris is one of the top economic centers in the world. If Paris were it’s own country, it would rank number 17 in the world’s economy with 769.7 billion USD. It brings in 30% of France’s wealth and is considered an engine to the global economy. It has the fourth largest GDP.

  7. Currency Paris started using the Euro(right) in 1999, in place of the Franc(left). However, the Euro wasn’t used throughout France until 2002. It was possible up until 2012 to exchange French Francs for Euros.

  9. Paris is headed by a Mayor who is elected by the citizens. The Mayor of Paris serves a six year term. The current Mayor of Paris is Bertrand Delanoe; he was elected in 2001 and re-elected in 2008. Paris is split into 20 districts each with their own Council and Mayor, but the Mayor of the City of Paris is in charge of them.

  11. Eiffel Tower The Eiffel Tower is 1,063 feet high and has been visited by over 200,000,000 people since its construction in 1889. It has two restaurants and estimated to make $29,000,000 a year from tourism.

  12. The Louvre The Louvre is one of the worlds largest museums and also a historic French monument. It is an extensive art gallery housing over 20,000 pieces of art. Last year, the museum had 8.8 million visitors.

  13. Notre Dame Cathedral The Notre Dame Cathedral is an important building. It holds the crown of thorns, a fragment from the cross, and a nail from the cross. It is a famous place for people to visit and see.

  14. Musee d’Orsay A museum smaller than the Louvre, but it houses one of the world’s largest impressionist painting exhibits. It is housed in a former railway station.

  15. Holidays • Bastille Day (July 14) – celebrates the storming of the Bastille, a French Prison. It started the French Revolution. • May Day (May 1) – Everything is closed on this day except for the Eiffel Tower and the Bastille.
