Expedients

  • Defined:

    • Something profitable, helpful or advantageous for practical reasons; something appropriate, advisable or useful in a situation that requires action.

Expedients

In order for something to be expedient…it must first be LAWFUL!

Not all things are expedient:

(Matthew 7:21)

"Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. (NKJV)

Expedients

In order for something to be expedient…it must first be LAWFUL!

Not all things are expedient:

(1 Corinthians 10:23)

All things are lawful; but not all things are expedient…(ASV)

Expedients

In order for something to be expedient…IT CANNOT BE SPECIFIED in the word of God.

: Which?

Sprinkling

Pouring

Immersion

OR…

OR…

Infant

Adult

OR…

Which Mode?

  • Gk. “baptitzo” (transliterated “Baptize” means “to immerse”)

  • cf. Ac. 8:38 “down intothe water”

  • Rom. 6:4 “buried with Him through baptism into death”

Who are the proper candidates of Baptism?

  • Believers Only:

    • (Mark 16:16) "He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. (NKJV)

    • (Acts 8:36-37) “…the eunuch said, ‘See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?’ Then Philip said, ‘If you believe with all your heart, you may.’”..

Remember!

Expedients

In order for something to be expedient…IT CANNOT BE SPECIFIED in the word of God.

Therefore: Baptizing Infants is not an expedient because it is not lawful – they are not candidates (because they cannot believe).

Sprinlking or pouring for baptism is not expedient because it is not lawful – it does not meet the definition of biblical baptism.

Expedients

In order for something to be expedient…IT MUST EDIFY.

(1 Corinthians 10:23-24) All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful; all things are lawful for me, but not all things edify. Let no one seek his own, but each one the other's well -being. (NKJV)

(1 Corinthians 10:33) just as I also please all men in all things, not seeking my own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved. (NKJV)

Expedients

  • In order for something to be expedient…ExpedientIT MUST NOT OFFEND THE CONSCIENCE OF ANOTHER CHRISTIAN.

(Romans 14:13-23) Therefore let us not judge one another anymore, but rather resolve this, not to put a stumbling block or a cause to fall in our brother's way. I know and am convinced by the Lord Jesus…

Expedients

  • In order for something to be expedient…ExpedientIT MUST NOT OFFEND THE CONSCIENCE OF ANOTHER CHRISTIAN.

…that there is nothing unclean of itself; but to him who considers anything to be unclean, to him it is unclean. Yet if your brother is grieved because of your food, you are no longer walking in love. Do…

…not destroy with your food the one for whom Christ died. Therefore do not let your good be spoken of as evil; for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy…

…Spirit. For he who serves Christ in these things is acceptable to God and approved by men. Therefore let us pursue the things which make for peace and the things by which one may edify…

…another. Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All things indeed are pure, but it is evil for the man who eats with offense. It is good neither to eat meat nor drink wine nor do…

…anything by which your brother stumbles or is offended or is made weak. Do you have faith? Have it to yourself before God…

Expedients

  • In order for something to be expedient…ExpedientIT MUST NOT OFFEND THE CONSCIENCE OF ANOTHER CHRISTIAN.

… Happy is he who does not condemn himself in what he approves. But he who doubts is condemnedif he eats, because he does not eat from faith; for whatever is not from faith is sin.

Expedients

  • In order for something to be expedient…IT MUST NOT OFFEND THE CONSCIENCE OF ANOTHER CHRISTIAN.

(Romans 14:4)

Who are you to judge another's servant? To his own master he stands or falls. Indeed, he will be made to stand, for God is able to make him stand.

Expedients

  • How to get along in matters of expediency.

(Romans 15:1)

We then who are strong ought to bear with the scruples of the weak, and not to please ourselves. (NKJV)

Expedients

  • How to get along in matters of expediency.

(1 Corinthians 8:9)

But beware lest somehow this liberty of yours become a stumbling block to those who are weak. (NKJV)

Expedients

  • How to get along in matters of expediency.

(1 Corinthians 8:13)

Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never again eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble. (NKJV)

(Food Represents Anything Expedient)

(Matthew 28:19)

"Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, (NKJV)

(Acts 2:41)

Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. (NKJV)

(Ephesians 5:19) speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord, (NKJV)
