  1. Jesus is Lord!Jerry D. Porter Intermountain District Ministry Team Retreat Trinity Pines Conf. Center September 25, 2013

  2. God’s highest goal for me… • To be like Jesus

  3. Core Values:Christian peopleHoliness peopleMissional people Mission: To make Christlike disciples in the nations

  4. To be like Jesus . . . In the fullness of the Spirit Now Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wild. For forty wilderness days and nights he was tested by the Devil. (Luke 4:1-2)

  5. In the fullness of the Spirit • Jesus was tempted • Spirit-filled pastors, leaders, and students are tempted • Temptation is not sin

  6. Sex He ate nothing during those days, and when the time was up he was hungry. The Devil, playing on his hunger, gave the first test: “Since you’re God’s Son, command this stone to turn into a loaf of bread.” Jesus answered by quoting Deuteronomy: “It takes more than bread to really live.” (Luke 4:3-4)

  7. Sex • God-given appetites are good • Satisfying appetites God’s way gives life • Satisfying appetites man’s way destroys life • Appetite-driven life can become addictive slavery

  8. Power For the second test he led him up and spread out all the kingdoms of the earth on display at once. Then the Devil said, “They’re yours in all their splendor to serve your pleasure. I’m in charge of them all and can turn them over to whomever I wish.

  9. Power “Worship me and they’re yours, the whole works.” Jesus refused, again backing his refusal with Deuteronomy: “Worship the Lord your God and only the Lord your God. Serve him with absolute single-heartedness.” (Luke 4:5-8)

  10. Power • We all have influence and power • Abusive self-seeking power kills and wounds • Christ-centered influence empowers others • Jesus is Lord!

  11. Herd For the third test the Devil took him to Jerusalem and put him on top of the Temple. He said, “If you are God’s Son, jump. It’s written, isn't it, that ‘he has placed you in the care of angels to protect you; they will catch you; you won’t so much as stub your toe on a stone.’”

  12. Herd “Yes,” said Jesus, “and it’s also written, ‘Don’t you dare tempt the Lord your God.’” That completed the testing. The Devil retreated temporarily, lying in wait for another opportunity. (Lk 4:9-13)

  13. Herd • We all belong to various groups or tribes that provide identity and community • Peer pressure can govern or curse us • In living for God’s pleasure I find my true identity • I am free from the HERD • I am free to serve the HERD

  14. In the power of the Spirit Jesus returned to Galilee powerful in the Spirit. (Luke 4:14 MSG) • Victory through radical surrender of • sex, power, and herd • A daily surrender of • sex, power, and herd

  15. Jesus is Lord! • Holiness is a crisis love experience of radical surrender and heart cleansing.

  16. Jesus is Lord! • Holiness is a crisis love experience of radical surrender and heart cleansing. • Holiness is a life-long love relationship with God and with each other as we grow in Christlikeness.

  17. “There is no single act of faith that answers for all time. If we could get spiritual supplies for an extended period, perhaps we . . . would forget to come to our Heavenly Father for thatcompanionship which is of greater consequence than any detached ‘blessing’ which could possibly come to us.”J. B . Chapman

  18. Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

  19. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. (Eph 6:10-17 NIV)

  20. Overcoming temptations in the power of the Spirit The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. (2 Cor. 10:4-5 NIV)

  21. Word of our testimony Spiritual accountability partners Overcoming temptationsJUST SAY “NO!” • Spiritual Weapons: • Name of Jesus • Blood of Jesus • Word of God • Prayer • Praise

  22. Overcoming temptationsJUST SAY “NO!” No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.(1 Cor. 10:13 NIV)

  23. Overcoming temptationsJUST SAY “NO!” You have taken off your old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator. (Col 3:9-10)

  24. His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires. (2 Peter 1:3-4 NIV)

  25. Jesus is Lord! We really do need significant “others”to live the holy life! • Disciplers and disciples who will lovingly hold me accountable. • Others who will walk with me as I follow Christ!

  26. Make this your common practice: Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you can live together whole and healed. The prayer of a person living right with God is something powerful to be reckoned with. (James 5:15-16 MSG)

  27. Which temptation do you struggle with the most? SEX POWER HERD
