  1. Some results of observation of ultraviolet and infrared emission from lightning discharges at Aragats Cosmic Station G.K. Garipov. Skobeltsyn Institute of Nuclear Physics, M.V.Lomonosov Moscow State University, Russia On behave of the Aragats science teams LEAD workshop Armenia, NOR AMBERD 9-12 June 2015

  2. Content. 1. Instrument for observation of ultraviolet and infrared emission from lightning 2. First results of observation of ultraviolet and infrared emission from lightning discharges in the area of Mounting ARAGATS and matching this data with observation from space 4. Some examples of gamma ray observation in thunderstorm simultaneously with optical emission measurements at Mountain ARAGATS and NOR AMBERD building and matching with space observation

  3. UV and IR detector

  4. Block-diagram of the UV & IR detector 1.Signal finding algorithm of the brightest flashes in every 5sec. time interval or a fixed threshold trigger algorithm. 2. Gain control algorithm to fix PMT anode current at a given level in the whole expected airglow range. 3.Interface algorithm for communication with the satellite board or computer. UV&IR detector comprises 2 PMT tubes and electronics block. (first two tubes measure an optical radiation, third measures the charge particle background) Two code are recorded and used in measurements: M- PMT gain DAC code and N- the PMT anode current ADC code (1) collimator, (2) UV-1 filter, (3) IR filter, MX—multiplexor, HV—voltage supply for PM tubes,ADC and DAC—analog-digital and digital-analog convertors, Logic Unit-FPGA.

  5. DUV – detector main parameters UV – 240-400nm weigh– 0.5 kg IR – 610-800nm power consumption – 2.5W Sensitive - area 0.4cm2 gain control range – 105 Field of view ~ 200 waveform amplitude range -4x103 Full dynamic range >108 Quantum efficiency photons to photoelectrons in UV range – 0.2 Quantum efficiency photons to photoelectrons in IR range – 0.02 Maximum realized sensitivity - single photoelectron

  20. Example of local series of flashes recoded by CHIBIS-M above Africa

  21. Summary 1.The presented data show reliable operation of the UV&IR detector at Aragats Cosmic Station. 2. Time structure of events observed at Aragats are similar to the events which were observed from space 3. The presented data confirm gamma ray emission in thunderstorm simultaneously in two points by different detectors at Aragats and Nor Amberd
