  1. Welcome to9th Grade Year: What to Expect Class of 2016 Students and Families

  2. What happens if you are absent? Parent/Guardian should call the attendance line at 457-6805 or it will be considered an unexcused absence. If a student is unexcused, an automated system will call his/her home after school that day. Students should check on PowerSchool each week to make sure that attendance is correct. They have two weeks to correct any mistakes. Reasons for absences: illness, medical appt., family death, others if approved by principal More than 10 absences require a doctor’s note.

  3. What happens if you are tardy? • 1st Tardy-Verbal Warning • 2nd Tardy-Verbal Warning • 3rd Tardy-Parent Contact • 4th & 5th Tardy-Immediate referral to Asst. Principal • 6th Tardy-Assign detention or in-school suspension

  4. Semester Test Opt Out Info • Students may opt out of 2 UHS final exams under the following conditions (class-by-class basis): • No unexcused absences per class • No more than 4 excused absences per class • No more than 3 unexcused tardies per class • No more than 10 total absences of any kind per class (includes school activities, college visits, etc.) • No out of school suspensions • No unexcused absences from LC or Connections

  5. UHS Graduation Requirements • Students need 46 credits to graduate including: • English-8 credits (4 years) • Social Studies-6 credits (3 years) • Math-6 credits (3 years) • Science-6 credits (3 years) • Health-1 credit (1 semester class) • Fitness for Life-1 credit (1 semester class) *pending approval • Computer Applications- 1 credit (1 semester class) • Physical Education-2 credits (every semester)

Upcoming Important Events • February 21, 2012-UHS Counselors visit UMS for classroom scheduling presentations • March 2, 2012-UHS Counselors return to UMS to meet with 8th graders about final 9th grade course selections • May 18/May 21, 2012-8th graders tour UHS • August 14, 2012 New student orientation at UHS (more info to come this summer)

  8. Online Registration for 2012-2013 • What you need to get started: • PowerSchool ID and Password • Website: www.powerschool.urbandale.k12.ia.us • 9th grade course selections including alternates The PowerSchool portal is open Feb. 21st-March 1st!

  9. How do I register? • Your PowerSchool screen will have this on the left hand side: • Choose “Class Registration” • You are ready to begin choosing your courses for high school!

  10. How do you select courses? • Click on your selection and then “okay” at the bottom. • Some subjects may allow you to choose more than one.

  11. Final steps to scheduling: • When you have completed all of your selections, click “submit” at the bottom right corner. • View your requests by clicking on “View Course Requests” in blue at the top of your screen. • Remember to “Sign Out” of PowerSchool. • Scheduling can take time, so be ready before you log on. PowerSchool can time you out of the session if you are inactive too long.
