  1. Let’s look at an example from our quote exercise

  2. Here we have quotes from the student store manager • Ted Williams, manager of the student store, says: • “The last 'robbery' we had was in August, 2000. And that was just a bunch of 9th graders who mistakenly tried to grab stuff as part of a hazing ritual at the school. We do not plan to beef up security. Our problems are with shoplifters, not robbers.”

  3. Let’s say we wanted to quote him last, after we wrapped up with Dombkowski

  4. So we have Dombkowski’s last statement Dombkowski said he hopes citizens will call with any leads or tips. Now HERE we want to put the manager’s comments.

  5. But we can’t just start quoting him or use a simple transition alone Dombkowski said he hopes citizens will call with any leads or tips. In the meantime, Ted Williams, manager of the student store, said, “ The last 'robbery' we had was in August, 2000. And that was just a bunch of 9th graders who mistakenly tried to grab stuff as part of a hazing ritual at the school. We do not plan to beef up security. Our problems are with shoplifters, not robbers.”

  6. We need a complex transition between speakers So let’s take part of his quote, paraphrase it as our transition, and leave the rest as a direct quote.

  7. Now we have Dombkowski said he hopes citizens will call with any leads or tips. In the meantime, Ted Williams, manager of the student store, said, the store does not plan to beef up security. “Our problems are with shoplifters, not robbers,” Williams said.

  8. We combined a simple and complex transition that can stand alone without the quote, and a direct quote that is said uniquely.
