  1. Gatsby Stoplight Activity THINK ABOUT THE FOLLOWING IDEA: Try to visualize Gatsby’s dream on a stoplight. The idea of getting Daisy would be the green light. What would the yellow light be for him? In other words, what are signs that he should see that would let him know that Daisy will never be his? What information in the text tells us this? What would the red light be for Gatsby? What will ultimately keep Gatsby from having the relationship with Daisy that he desires? What information from the text supports your inference?

  2. Directions Other characters in the novel have dreams as well. On a piece of paper, create a stoplight and color the sections green, yellow and red. Choose one character other than Gatsby and consider what his/her dream may be. Pick from Daisy, Myrtle, Tom or Nick. Place the character’s name above your stoplight image. Describe the dream: Near the green light, identify the dream for this character and include a direct quotation from the text (document with the page number) that supports the inference you’ve made about his/her dream. What are the conflicts? Near the yellow light, list obstacles that could prevent the character from reaching his/her dream. Support your inference with information from the text. Make a prediction: Near the red light, describe what you believe will ultimately prevent the character from obtaining their “green light.” Explain your answer with information from the text as well.

  3. Format:Draw a stoplight in the center. For each light complete the following tasks: • On the stoplight write your inference. • On the left side of the stoplight write the quote from the novel that supports your inference. • On the right side of the stoplight, explain out your inference. • Your stoplight shows: Quote + Inference = Explanation
